CHP Ready for the 'War on Drunk Drivers' on the 101 Fwy

A 28-mile stretch of the 101 Freeway has been identified as one of the DUI-related high-collision areas in Los Angeles County. Between 2005 and 2007, 19 people died and 619 were injured in crashes involving a drunk driver along the corridor between North Hollywood and Westlake.

Thanks to a quarter-million dollar grant, the agency this year will aggressively fight "the war on drunk drivers" (their words) by adding roving DUI patrols, sobriety checkpoints during times where historically there has been a high incidence of DUI driving violations, community education and the formation of a local task force that will look into the corridor, suggesting solutions.

What? Sounds really awesome to me.

Fuck drunk drivers. The lot of you.

"suggesting solutions"

Have a public transit system that does not close down at midnight.

DEFINITELY. That's great they're building new bars downtown and trying to turn it into a hot nightlife spot, but I don't have any way to get home! LA is far too large to not have a decent/late night public transportation system.

And Scott (post 5), have you ever been to any cities outside of Los Angeles? There are plenty of drunks on the subways of NY and the Muni's and Bart's of Bay Area.

I've made mistakes in the past and when I drove under the influence, TRUST ME, I did not WANT to be driving - but how else are you supposed to get around LA? I was a broke ass college kid, I couldn't pay for a cab every time I wanted to see my friends at bars. Regardless of how ignorant that sounds, that's the reality a lot of people are facing.

So glad to hear of this.

I drive between the 405 and 134 and many times when coming home late from work I've seen drunks weaving in and out of lanes.

Heck, while they're at it, they should patrol the 405 between the 118 and the 101 as that seems to be a trouble spot too.

So you are saying a drunk ass person will have the wists to get on public transportation? Right..........

Scott... what's wists? Kinda speaks like Elmer Fudds' wrists.

Well, other people do it.

The point isn't to only take transit when you're shitfaced. If people are used to being able to take the subway conveniently to other places, they'll know enough about how it works (by experimenting when SOBER) to be able to manage just fine.

Not to mention that our subway stations are pretty easy to navigate. Have you ever seen the tube in London? Changing lines sometimes means a half mile walk, or so it seems. That said, I've gotten on subways while buzzed in New York, DC, Berlin, Prague AND London. As a tourist who, half the time, didn't speak the language.

In fact, this makes me wonder if you've ever taken the subway at all.

I'm all for catching drunk drivers but check points on the 101? They won't be satisfied until the 101 is a parking lot 24/7.

I back later operating hours for public transit, especially on the red and orange line.
