Park[ing] Day Spot in Studio City Offering Free Vegan Food

As part of the 30 days of vegan event, two vegan women took a parking space in Studio City today in honor of Park[ing] Day, offering some vegan baked goods and ice cream sandwiches.

Inspired by visiting spots last year, Jenna (no last name given) set the spot up after learning that Los Angeles is ranked last among major cities in per captia open space. "I think it's a shame," she said. "I'm out here to create awareness." She's also promoting veganism as a green lifestyle. "A plan-based diet does more for than the environment than driving a hybrid," a handmade flyer she made, citing a University of Chicago study.

Find them on the southside of Ventura Boulevard, west of Laurel Canyon Boulevard near Vantage Avenue (map). For all the spots around the city today, check this map.

Great to meet you Zach. See you around!

Great to meet you, too, today James! Welcome to L.A.

What exactly is the point of the "Park[ing]" days anyway?

It just seems like an opportunity to create more trash on the city streets and jam up parking spaces and/or possibly cause more traffic.

The point is to highlight just how much space we use for parking and cars in this city and just how little public space there is in L.A.

It only happens once a year and during work hours. Most people are already parked and in their offices, I don't think it's that big a deal. Also, the people setting these up generally pick up after themselves pretty well as far as I can tell.

Again, that message doesn't come across to me.

Do people really need a reminder about how many cars there are in this State and LA in particular? Seriously, I've never heard anyone say anything along the lines of "traffic in L.A isn't *that* bad, here, let me block off 2 lanes on the 405 to show you what *real* bad traffic would look like."

Maybe I assume too much, but I would think it is a given that people in the city understand that cars/traffic/concrete jungle are a problem. I don't see how making the situation worse serves any useful purpose.

Seems more disruptive than anything else. If I owned a business near where these folks are doing this, I'd be rather annoyed that my potential customers can't park there.

As for the "only once a year" thing...we could also argue that all the extra pollution caused by the traffic it generates negates that saved by the "lights off hour" some months back. So what have we actually accomplished? Since the lights off thing is only once a year too, why do it?

BTW, as a side note, I did participate in the lights off event, I am just using it as an example.

I can see it causing traffic, everyone will stop and look, more un-needed traffic = more pollution. There are plenty of parks, most I see are empty so use them!

Precisely.

In reading the other post on the topic, it mentions something to the effect of serving as a reminder that we need more green space.

Don't disagree with the latter part of that, but I really don't get that message from someone sitting on a piece of plastic turf.

I don't think I was meant to understand this one.

What "plenty of parks" are you talking about? The green space that exists is soooo disorganized and not well taken care of. Have you been to cities with actual park systems? Which are actually USEFUL to the residents?

Though mostly, it's to highlight the difference between cars and parks. :-D

I don't know which are Lala is in, but I know in my area (South LA), it is hit and miss.

Sometimes they are busy, other times, completely empty.

I am in the South Bay area quite often on weekends and there are 2 parks off of Prairie which are always dead, even on long weekends. Nice places too.

Another one is right next to El Camino College. I'd say about 70% of the time that I drive there, it is nowhere near capacity.

Same for Manhattan Beach area. There is a place near Manhattan Beach and Sepulveda that is rarely busy.

All day? I'll stop by on my way home from work if so... If it's just during lunch I might have to scoot over there anyway!

They said 3 p.m., so hopefully you made it for lunch!

Also, it's funny that this post is right above the post about the meat sandwich. ;-)

I live on the east side, there are 2 lovely parks within walking distance from me, and in pasadena, and alhambra there are several that I go to or pass by on occassion. Maybe all the parks are here on the east side?? I've seen them driving through neighborhoods on the westside too.
