Pencil This In: A Kubrick Retrospective, Celebrating the Chapbook

The Egyptian Theater begins a retrospective of Stanley Kubrick films tonight. On the big screen at 7:30 pm is a 70mm print of 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). Watch this morality tale on technology as supercomputer HAL attempts to eliminate the bothersome human astronaut in space. The film will be introduced by Mike Kaplan, who who was VP and marketing point person for Kubrick's US company Polaris Productions for this film an A Clockwork Orange.

PERFORMANCE
Captured Aural Phantasy Theater brings a revival of their Teen Angst A-Go-GO! show back to the Alexandria Hotel, Palm Court Ballroom, 1st Floor, tonight through Saturday. The production examines those awkward adolescent through mid-20th century pop and pulp culture (i.e., music and comic books). The evening is built around radio show-style readings of real mid-century comic book stories and also includes visual art, short multimedia acts, live music...and prizes for the audience. The show begins at 8 pm and tickets are $10.

TALK
The Echo Park Film Center hosts Cinema Cabaret: Short Films by Sandra Powers tonight at 8 pm. The evening combines the mysterious and fantastical short films by Sandra Powers (co-founder of the Masque Films art collective), with live cabaret performance by the renowned opera singer Timur Bekbosunov. “Exploring the effusive elements of shadows and reflections, often in a ‘music video’ form, Sandra's work incorporates early film and malerisch aesthetics, resulting in surrealistic imagery that is derived from dreams and imagination.” Tickets are $5.
