It's safe to say that weed shops are more common than Pinkberry and Starbucks. Thanks to the LA Times, we know that there's about five "collectives" within a five-minute walk of us (how about you?). And look, the people in the Valley can't complain that their not getting their fair share. In fact, one neighborhood prosecutor told the Sherman Oaks Neighborhood Council earlier this summer that the LAPD's Van Nuys Division had the most dispensaries than any other in the city. Here are some other interesting facts, via the Times:

  • Although there are 966 dispensaries registered in the city, some are not open (and there's definitely the possibility that some are not registered).
  • The word "collective" is used 199 times in names of the dispensaries.
  • 260 of them fall within 1,000 feet of a school, a library or a park.
  • In 2007 when the City Council placed a moratorium on them, there were 186 already licensed. A loop hole in that law allowed for hundreds to apply--779 to be exact--and many set up shop as they awaited a decision on the application. So far, only about 85 applications have been reviewed with all being rejected or withdrawn.

Wow maaaan.

Why are some of them rust colored and others green?

Ah. The green one's are legal. The orange under a hardship exemption. Cute.
