Last week a celebration was held on the lawn of City Hall during the weekly farmers' market to rejoice thirty years of locally-sourced farm-fresh produce in Los Angeles, and to look ahead to a future where we make buying and consuming such produce a priority. Part of the event was to announce the winner of GOOD magazine's "Redesign Your Farmers' Market" contest, which invited entrants to articulate and render their vision for the next generation of farmers' markets and how they'll serve the public.
The winning entry came from LA's Mia Lehrer + Associates. Lehrer, along with Astrid Diehl and Zhihang Luo took top honors for their mobile market concept:
“Farm on Wheels is a program that brings locally grown produce to the people of L.A. County. The program selects fresh fruits and vegetables from local farmers and distributes the produce through a network of farm trucks. To engage more people in the consumption of fresh foods and support local and urban agriculture, Farm on Wheels creates a simplified and convenient food distribution network between farmers and consumers.”
We're wild about food on wheels these days here in Los Angeles, to be certain. So "Farm on Wheels" doesn't seem all that far-fetched, now does it?

Hasn't the mexican community in LA had this concept for a long time now? There are many mobile markets that cruise neighborhoods in trucks, selling produce and other goods.
Exactly my thoughts, but I am unsure if those trucks are direct from farmers or something else. Nonetheless, it's a great idea inspired from that great idea. I'd be happy if my farmers market bread guy came rolling down the street. '
And I'd love it if Kevin Tran of Vinh Loi Tofu, a restaurant and tofu factory where he makes tofu fresh every morning, would roll down my street so I wouldn't have to go to Reseda to buy tofu. And by the way, he rules! Here's our LAist story on his place.
Hey Zach, at least you live in the valley. For those of us over the hill, Kevin should open up another restaurant/tofu factory!
Anyone notice that in the first photo with the truck in it, they have used an image of the president. Right side with the blue tie and suit.
