TV Junkie: More Advertisers Dump Beck; Groundling to 'SNL'; Dern Scores Series

Laura Dern as Katherine Harris in HBO's "Recount"
We're happy to see more advertisers pull themselves from FOX's Glenn Beck show. Hate speech isn't free speech.
---
We're also happy to see two new female cast members for "Saturday Night Live": best of luck to you Jenny Slate and Nasim Pedrad (of Groundlings fame!).
---
HBO is giving the green light to yet another comedy, this one starring Laura Dern as a woman whose spiritual awakening wreaks havoc on her home and work life. We've loved Laura Dern since we first saw her in Blue Velvet and her hilarious portrayal of Floridian harpy Katherine Harris in HBO's "Recount" last year contributed to landing this series.

Hate speech isn't free speech.

Um, yes...it is.

There's nothing in the Constitution about your right not to be offended.

I think Bill Maher is one of the biggest a-holes on the planet.

But instead of subjecting myself to what I consider his form of "hate speech" ...I merely choose not to watch his program.

Boycotts are for intellectual morons and fascists.

"...I merely choose not to watch his program. "

isn't that a form of boycotting?

isn't that a form of boycotting?

Touche.

Only the difference here is I don't clog HBO's phone lines demanding they pull Maher off the air.

What do I care if other people choose to tune in to his left-wing rhetoric?

Maher vomits up, Beck vomits up, Olbermann vomits up, Limbaugh vomit ups ...it's all the same bullshit specially packaged for extremists.

And just for the record, I think Beck is off his meds. He makes Howard Beale look like Walter Cronkite.

For the record, I agree with you. But I think a lot of people expect that because they are exercising "free speech" they shouldn't have consequences they have to deal with. Glenn Beck expresses his "freedom of speech" and advertisers are more than justified in exercising their "freedom of speech" by pulling ad dollars. Freedom of speech doesn't mean freedom from being offended. But it does mean you get to complain right back.

"Boycotts are for intellectual morons and fascists."

Growing up in Texas, I saw right wing Christian groups use it a lot.

But for those whose only real interest is money, (not honesty, or integrity). With holdiing those all important comsumer dollars can be a very effective strategy.

Let me put it this way....the more you "boycott" this nut the higher his ratings will go.

Yeah, but the whole point of high ratings is that advertisers then want to buy more ads at a higher premium. If there are other factors causing them to not want to buy ads and support the costs of the show, well, then all the viewers in the world won't matter. You'll end up with just conservative advertisers, if they can scrape up enough. I doubt the Heritage Foundation has THAT much money.

Glen Beck will always have a faithful audience from a certain sector of society. I have an Uncle who eats up every turd that drops out of the man's mouth.

You make a good point that in the short run a well publicized boycott will only increase his ratings, but I seriously doubt that kind of a bounce would be sustainable in the long run. Especially if these folks actually listen to what Beck has to say.

So true.

When you attack the Right and Fox News, they circle wagons. Glen Beck would like nothing more than to be a martyr for the Right.

The news is that the list of advertisers has expanded from 2 or 3 to several dozen leaving Beck with only mesothelioma attorneys and male enhancement sponsors.

Let's keep an eye on the advertisers. They'll pull their support now because it's the politically expedient thing to do, but those businesses have a bottom line as well. I expect them to quietly go back when it's safe to do so. Ratings and $$$$ speak louder than politics.
