FOOD ON A STICK
Fig Restaurant in Santa Monica helps celebrate the Santa Monica Pier’s Centennial celebration next week with special menu items that are on a stick, on bread and in a basket. Specials include: Wagyu Corn Dogs ($9), Scotch Duck Egg ($7), Bratwurst on a Pretzel Roll ($9) and Blue Cheese Filled Buffalo Chicken ($9).
ART
The art collective Slanguage holds the first event of their three-month Engagement Party residency tonight at MOCA. They’ll present films that respond, in part, to the museum's landmark 1992 exhibition Helter Skelter: LA Art in the 1990s. The works will be presented in a "multiplex" format that will allow for simultaneous screenings--and participatory discussions--of different films at various locations around the museum's Grand Avenue campus. The event will feature a fortune tellers; an interactive artwork, Artifice Orange, by Slanguage member, Arnold Vargas; and a participatory urban planning exercise, Slang-topia: Rethinking the City, which uses recycled materials to assist participants in creating an ideal urban form.
JOHN HUGHES TRIBUTE*
The New Beverly Cinema hosts a John Hughes Tribute night tonight with two 80s classics: 1986’s Pretty in Pink, with Molly RIngwald and Andrew McCarthy at 7:30 pm and Sixteen Candles with his muse Ringwald and Michael Anthony Hall. (Awesome soundtracks on both films...we still have “Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want” by The Smiths on a mixtape somewhere.)
SHOP + PARTY
Daydream Republic, a gallery, studio and rehearsal space throws a party "Down the Rabbit Hole" tonight and tomorrow evening to celebrate the launch of their website. They’ll showcase LA's underground art along with handmade jewelry, clothes, candles and other goods. They’ll also have a cash bar that features $2 beer, $3 wine and $4 cocktails.
VINTAGE FILM
The five-day Cinecon 45 Classic Film Festival at the Egyptian gives us an excuse to stay indoors all weekend away from the choking smoky air. Starting today, the festival screens 30 rare silent and early sound features and short films that are rarely given public screenings. Tonight’s features include Trial Marriage (Columbia, 1929) and Playboy of Paris (Paramount, 1930).
MORE ART
There's a "Thought Processor" Group Show tonight at Munky King with a reception from 7-10 pm. The art show will feature a 200% Thought Processor paper toy and an original 2D piece from each artist. Artists include 14bolt, Aaron Kraten, Angry Woebots, Branded, Bob Motown, Chris Battle, Dave Chung, Enik, Erik Siador, Gordon Hammond, Chris Moreno, Jawa, Jim Mahfood, Martin Hsu, Matt Linares, Michael C. I went to the Daydream Republic event and the entire thing was a SHAM! The flyer and website assured that it was free and that the drinks were either 2, 3, or 4 dollars. I came and some drunk guy made me pay a $5 cover despite my protest and the beers were $5, not $2. I don't know what type of business Daydream Republic is running, but they are not to be trusted.
