Running Rodents Aflame a Concern in Spreading Fire

rodentonfire.jpg Imagine this if you will. A fire in a forest finds itself near a rodent, whose fur lights on fire. Still alive, the little guy flees to another part of the unburned forest only to light dry brush, thus spreading the fire. That's what firefighters are dealing with in the Oak Glen III Fire out in San Bernardino County, according to a brief in the Press-Enterprise. Rodents are trying to flee the fire and cross Oak Glen Road only for firefighters to pick them up and throw them back into the burning forest. The 43-world brief has definitely caught readers' attention in the comments section: some are angered (and for different reasons) and disturbed by the news and some think it's funny as hell.

I'm on the side of disturbing. Poor animals! I know fires (set by dry lightening) are a part of nature in the Western US, but it's sad to see animals killed and their habitats destroyed. When they let the fire burn through Yellowstone 20 or so years ago, I think that was one of the controversies they dealt with.

Lets see here. Toss a burning rodent back into the flames or beat it to death with a shovel. Is there really that much of a difference?

I'm calling bullshit on this one. Animals fleeing forrest fires is a reality. Firefighters catching running blazing rodents is quite another.

I am sickened and horrified. For any animal, which I am sure it not just rodents caught in the fire is sad and heartbreaking, there has to be a level of compassion for them.

You know what is even more horrible? Sometimes people INTENTIONALLY poison rodents!!!!???!??!!!!! I have seen grotesque contraptions made of wood, springs, a metal clip and a DISGUSTING little metal plate where you smear peanut butter or cheese...IT SNAPS THEIR LITTLE NECKS!!!! (or spines...!!!!!)

Personally I want my body to be able to withstand the 35+ diseases either directly or indirectly transmitted by rodents so I don't condone any of this rodent killing business at all.

If it's what they gotta do to prevent the fire from spreading then so be it. The rodents are already on fire and will have excruciating burns to their bodies as it is. If you knew what a gorgeous place Oak Glen was you would feel the same way. A big THANK YOU To the Fire Fighters for fighting so hard to protect this wonderful Apple Orchard Town! I'm praying for you, Oak Glen!

Reminds me of the opening scene in Burton's "Mars Attacks"... with the burning cattle.
