National Park Fires: Yosemite & Pinnacles National Monument
Further up north, two fires are affecting some of the most beautiful parts of California. The Meadow Fire has been burning in Yosemite National Park since Wednesday and the Gloria Fire, burning since Thursday near Soledad, is threatening parts of Pinnacles National Monument.
On Wednesday, National Park Service officials began a controlled burn meant to be only 90 acres, but grew to around 2,200 acres by the next day in Yosemite National Park. The Meadow Fire today grew minimally--only 44 acres--and is 10 percent contained.
As the Gloria Fire nears Pinnacles National Monument, Superintendent Eric Brunnemann closed the park's westside and all backcountry trails to regular staff and all visitors. “Due to the proximity and potential danger of the Gloria Fire burring into the park’s west side, I am compelled to temporarily close these areas of the park to insure the safety of our visitors and staff,” he said in a statement. “We are working closely with Cal Fire and will be reassessing these closures each day.”
