The start of ice hockey action in L.A. usually serves as reminder to Angelenos that although the weather might still be nice outside, summer is indeed over. This year, however, the L.A. Kings have something special in store for fans and they don't have to wait until fall to enjoy it.
Action begins this evening when Live frontman Eddie Kowalczyk performs an acoustic set at Nokia Theatre to help kick-off L.A Kings Hockey Fest. The inaugural three day event at L.A. Live celebrates everything relating to Kings hockey and the sport itself.
Festivities begin at 6 PM, with Kowalczyk scheduled to take the stage at 7 PM, ready to thrill fans with renditions of some of Live's hits such as Lightning Crashes, I Alone, Selling the Drama and others.
Kowalczyk's performance will be complimented by a series of other events for Kings fans, including a pep-rally style party with team and alumni introductions and other activities. Hockey Fest will carry over to Saturday and Sunday with day long events and a series of interactive forums that will keep purple-and-black fans busy about the L.A. Live complex.
Saturday's events include autograph sessions, a street hockey tournament and interactive forums featuring present and past Kings players.
Those interested in learning more about the upcoming season or NHL in general should not miss the NHL Experts Panel at noon on Saturday. Hosted by ESPN's John Buccigross, the panel will feature former Kings Kelly Hrudey, Ray Ferraro and Jim Fox. And if you enjoyed watching Marty McSorley take the ice because in the back of your mind you knew a fight was about to erupt any second, you won't want to miss the Enforcers Speaker Series, immediately following the NHL Experts Panel.
Perhaps the most awaited event on Saturday will be the reunification of The Triple Crown Line. Former Kings Marcel Dionne, Dave Taylor and Charlie Simmer reunite to share their memories relating to their storied careers.
The three day event will close at 3 PM on Sunday, but not before a Kings gear garage sale to be held that same day. Last on the list of highlights, fans interested in learning about the Kings' plans for the upcoming season cannot miss Sunday morning's Hockey Operations discussion with the Kings front office and Head Coach Terry Murray.
A full schedule of events and tickets are available via the L.A Kings Hockey Fest site. If you can't make it all three days, pick up a single day pass and get out there to support the Kings!
UPDATE: Fans can also tune into Kings Vision for live coverage of tonight's festivities, starting at 6:30 PM, as well as the Triple Crown Line event tomorrow at 4 PM. Kings Vision is the online broadcast network of LAKings.com and will be on hand throughout the entire event.
