Midnight Movie: Hollywood & Western's Not Quite Right

A Metro station. Councilman Garcetti's office. The gateway to Thai Town. New development. The Hollywood & Highland ownership, The CIM Group's involvement (they were just given a princely loan from The City for another project too.) The Hollywood Boulevard and Western Ave intersection had a lot of puzzle pieces in place for it to be called a neighborhood on the rise. Not only has the rise ceased, but it's in an obvious tailspin. More on The Battle for Hollywood & Western over at Curbed.

What a disgrace for a company like CIM to let a property end up like this. From Curbed LA:

“I would say that clearly CIM should have done more to keep those properties secured,” said [Assistant City Attorney Tina] Hess. Referring to the numerous people who have been sleeping and loitering on the property, Hess said: “A dozen people clearly residing in one of the properties, that should never happen, particularly with a company like CIM."
Also, it's pretty ridiculous that the easiest "broken window" to fix was the graffiti viewable from the streets and sidewalks. How lame can you get?

I'm pretty sure that's where I lost my virginity.

This city doesn't take development, policing, zoning or the citizens seriously.

I was taking the Metro yesterday and had to yell at two panhandlers harassing tourists for money at the Metro card purchasing machine at Hollywood and Highland. While the tourists were waiting the panhandlers would get right behind them and ask them for their change. It was essentially robbery as the two were pretty intimidating figures.

I went to Pico and Normandie to pick up some cleats at Nicky's sports and when I came out my bike had been stolen.

I took the bus back to Wilshire and Vermont and got back on the train. When I arrived back at Hollywood and highland 4 hours later the panhandlers were still working the tourists.

What the fuck is wrong with this city?

I cannot even tell you the last time I saw metro police on the red line. Apparently they harass people at Union Station now. I also can't tell you how many tourists used to come into my cafe with their kids and say, "Uh, THIS is Hollywood? Is there anything to DO around here?" Ask any business in that area. It's a weird mixture of locals, homeless people and tourists, which, surprisingly enough, don't always make a good combination!

I can't believe the police told Cindy that she shouldn't have removed the knife. What they should have done is offered their heartfelt apologies for not doing their job sooner and leaving the community to fend for itself. I don't get it, why isn't the spot a priority? It's such a central location - does nobody amongst the officials care that it makes LA look really bad?

Marina...I just want to clarify, it was not the LAPD that reprimanded me, it was the management of CIM.

I have been working as block captain for eight years, and my experience with the LAPD has been extremely positive. We moved here due to the shall I say..."the cold economic season" This area was not the greatest, but we have had to make do.

While organizing the neighborhood watch, the LAPD has been an amazing asset to transforming this area. The previous owner of the Gershwin; we worked hand in hand, slowly and surely improving the quality of life for everyone here.

When CIM took over, everything went back wards. Last week the city attorney asked: How on earth did this site pass his radar?

I said it was my fault, because I got gravely ill and couldn't attend to as much as I used to. I know that was a silly thing to say...but...the truth is...we care about our neighborhood, even tho it had gone through a rough patch, we were well on our way, with the help of various city agencies.

I'm so disappointed with CIM, and when they told me today, the video was all lies, I could only step back and see the landscape of los angeles politics. Pretty Sad!

But I wont give up...nor will our neighborhood!

And thank you for supporting us.

Maybe CIM's strategy is to let the neighborhood deteriorate, the current law abiding residents move out in disgust, and CIM gets to pick up the property for a song and not have to pay the law abiding residents who live in the area now relocation fees.

That sounds like an 80's movie plot where the only answer is dancing.

BINGO!!

selling to CRA!!!

not sure if this video was a catalyst for change but there was significant construction going on there today. one of the complexes was demolished and there was a giant backhoe cleaning up the mess.

it's a shame they're displacing all the transients, drug pushers, and prostitutes.

I think the unexpected (and requested by the community) visit of the City Attorneys office with the LAPD was a catalyst for CIM to do something quick, they had no choice!

Its very noisy, but it will be worth it. Our chief concern, is..how many/much property does CIM own in the first place? How many of these properties are sitting idel? Lets see...The old circuit city mall on sunset, the reseda theater, shopping center on sherman way, the mid way center (dirt hole). That's just a few. The banks are not loaning money to CIM; so CIM gets together with Tony V to water lawns, and talk about a Circus.
