The word Recess brings back memories of freedom and play. Chef Sevan Azarian, private chef to the stars, late of Fury Rok & Rol Sushi Lounge, had exactly that vibe in mind when he opened up this little coffee house/cafe/charcuterie in Glendale last weekend. The atmosphere is relaxed and easy and the menu is dotted with playful touches - plus there are giant cookies!
But remember how at recess you always had to run real fast right when the bell rang or all of the swings would be taken? Recess is a little bit like that too, Their sudden popularity has been causing them to run out of sandwich fixings as early as 3pm some days. The "Pig Headed" sandwich looks so tempting, "Imported Italian Prosciutto, Fresh Mozzarella, Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Balsamic Vinegar" served panini-style on ciabatta or a French baguette. But if you want to try this sandwich marvel, you better get to Recess early because by lunchtime they are all gone. Hopefully, as they find their sea legs the Pig Headed sandwiches will be plentiful.
Meanwhile, The Jambon Fromage "Camembert Cheese and Ham" may be the best ham and cheese sandwich you will ever eat. Unbelievable. The Asian pasta salad or fruit salad (OK, melon balls) are both good choices for side dishes, which are ordered separately,
The green salads are delicious; the chef has a way with dressings. The cooked pastas served as "Principal's" specials in the evenings are swoon-worthy. Not only are the flavors well-balanced and delicous, but the pasta manages to be soft without being chewy, a relief from all of the al dentes out there. The pastas definitely outshine the pizza. Recess also serves breakfast. The buttermilk waffles and eggs benedict look particularly tempting.
Service is friendly and accomodating. When the inevitable glitches of a new restaurant pop up, like running out of something, they do everything they can to make you happy. And if they are not too busy, they will even sit down for a chat. Friends and family are often visiting, giving the place the feel of a neighborhood barber. One expects them to break out the chess set at any moment.
Still, someday I hope to wrap my face around the elusive prosciutto sandwich. Maybe if I run really, really fast next time the bell rings...
