Recession Obsession: Breakfast Sandwiches

Recession Obsession: Breakfast Sandwiches by Caleb Bacon
Cuban Sandwich Pictured, And Not A Tasty Egg and Bacon Croissant

A Recession Obsession is, 1) a meal so great that it stays in your mind long after digestion's end, and, 2) plays nice with your sensitive wallet. Is there a better place than Los Angeles to eat a wide variety of amazing food that so happens to be inexpensive? Probably not. We're as lucky as we are well fed. We last obsessed over Tacos El Pastor in Hollywood, and some cheap-enough organic at Green Zone. Today, we obsess...

I hail from a land where the Breakfast Sandwich is King (and not the one that comes from the Burger's King.) In the Northeast there's a serious Breakfast Sandwich culture and its hub is a chain for which LA's East Coast transplants bemoan longing: Dunkin Donuts. Their morning formula is simple. Egg, cheese, and breakfast meat gets wedged in a croissant, bagel or an English muffin. It's a great way to start your day.

Silver Lake's outpost for all-Cuban-things-delicious, Cafe Tropical, does this perfectly while throwing in some of their own personality. At $3.50 - $4.25 each their breakfast sandwiches are LAist's latest Recession Obsession.

Breakfast Is Served

Your meat options are bacon, ham or, get this, turkey. That must be Tropical's Cuban flair as turkey on an East Coaster's breakfast sandwich would make them wonder if it was April 1st. The bacon is cooked to wonderful crunchiness and does its job to keep bacon's elevated popularity. The bread choice is a croissant. Trust me. You won't long for a bagel. The egg is just right and, while the cheese comes in slice-form, it would be missed if absent.

Cafe Tropical is off the hook. Another piece could be written on their baked goods, as well as a separate piece for their cafe con leche. Oh yeah. The same for their non-breakfast Cuban sandwiches. A Cuban sandwich (Cubano, pictured) is a nice way to spice up breakfast if you're not in an egg-centric mood. They're $5.50 each. Not bad for my favorite Cubano in LA.

Buttertart on Verdugo. Egg & Spam on Hawaiian bread.

I too hail from Boston (somewhat obvious per my username) and cannot for the life of me find a good place to get breakfast that can take the place of Dunkins or the local stores. Therefore, I am forced to go to Starbucks to get a reduced fat turkey bacon sandwich which is really filling and pretty good at $2.95.

MMm and if you can have "breakfast dessert" they have those yummy guava pastries.

PS. I get my sandwich fix at Porto's
