Los Angeles ranked 47 out of 50 in the Job Market Competition index, according to Indeed.com via the LA Times. That translates to one job posting for eight unemployed people per night. It's a little worse in 48th ranked Riverside where one job is posted for every nine people per night. Unemployment in California keeps breaking records. In June, it reached 11.5% while nationally it hit 9.5%.

Maybe if wealthy Californians broke loose with some of that squirreled away cash things wouldn't be so tough.
But i think this holds true even out of a recession. Unless you work in the biz, service industry, or for the city itself there isn't much to do in the city of LA proper. At least that's my experience from being a native.
Lots o' small businesses in the valley. For now. I've thankfully been employed for the past 3 years, but before that I never had a problem finding a job. Unlike my best friend who's now been out of work for 8 months. Try going to a small town or city, or even better, a military town, and see how good the job market is, even for retail and service jobs paying minimum wage.
Maybe there's something to that whole "having a business friendly climate" idea.
There's lotta tech jobs too, if you're in the web biz. Gaming seems big too. How can Tweekerside be only 1 point behind LA? What jobs do they have, either work at UCR or a cashier at Bakers.
