The City of Los Angeles is one step closer to four years ago after yesterday's City Council meeting, when a study concerning the possible adoption of a Google-based e-mail system was approved, reports the Daily News.
The current e-mail service being used on "an aging computer network in need of major upgrades," has been the source of headaches among its users, suffering frequent periods of inaccessibility and limited functionality.
Adopting a Google system would mean converting from their current use of internal network servers to "cloud" computing, which employs the internet. This, however, has prompted concerns about possible security issues from agencies who would need to make the move, including the City Attorney's Office and the LAPD. Some agencies, like the Fire Department, have said they would not have problems with Google's level of security, and many agencies have reportedly already expressed interest in participating in the study's pilot program.

I realize being a Google groupie is quite fashionable these days, however, the issue of the city switching to Google Apps is not quite as simple as receiving an invitation. The enterprise version costs money and getting the city all setup will involve expensive contractor work. Guess how all that money spent to give city employees a shiny email system will help tax payers over the current system? It won't. I think the mayor just had an itch to scratch and here we are.
