Green Onions photo via Cookthink Okay, everyone. An apology in advance, but seriously, it's time for a Martha Stewart moment. Thanks to a reader comment on our urban farming-pinkberry connection post, we learn a little trick that will be exciting to try out. LAist commenter LadyAMC points out an article on Cookthink about re-growing green onions on your window sill. Basically, keep about an inch of the bulb-end, place it in a cup of water on a sunny windowsill, let them grow and clip bits off as you need. "It works, I've got 6 of'em growing right now," she exclaimed.
A photographer-blogger in Colorado who has several green onions growing warns of the potential smell, but has an easy solution: "Don't forget to rinse the roots and change the water every other day or so."
We're growing a few green onions in our window sill and will photo document its progress over the next few weeks.

I too similarly participated in some homegrown scallion action. I documented it on my blog. Sadly, it did not end well:

This is a good trick. I do it all the time.
Other neat store bought tricks:
sprout a clove of garlic in soil - even before the clove matures, great green above ground clippings for stir fry.
sprout a nobby piece off of a ginger root in soil - again, just as with the green onion, you can clip the green top sprouts for stir fry.
you guys rock!
It's nice to see that laist has recognized the push for people to grow their own fruits and vegetables! Hope to see some more written on heirloom vegetables, as well as where you can find seeds etc... rareseeds.com, victorygarden.com among others. Maybe a story on local schools who have been succesfully growing stuff for a while too?
www.tomatobob.com is another one
BTW: s30lee, I tried the victorygardens.com link and i believe the one you are talking about it victoryseeds.com?
cool garden links:

cool seed links
Seeds of Change (great heirloom stuff: the spinach seeds i got from them *rock* - they also sell at whole foods and such occasionally)

Great info! With our amazingly long growing season and the crappy economy this is good to know.
There was always an avocado seed pierced with toothpicks and hanging in a jar of water on my windowsill when I was growing up.
There's a lot one can do with a windowsill.

Huh, why would anyone want that smell perpetually in their kitchen? I grow onions year round from seed in the yard and regularly trim up to 1/3 the scallion leaves off with little effect on the bulbs. They can be used ornamentally in the landscape or scattered amongst other crops, like squash or peas.
Save the windowsill for tender tropicals, sprouts or germinating seeds and plant the alliums in the ground.
