Those who own horses are likely to get less strict water usage laws under a motion going through Los Angeles city council right now, but on a more national level congress looking into tax relief for pet owners.
The Humanity and Pets Partnered Through the Years (HAPPY) Act (more specifically, H.R. 3501) would allow individuals to deduct up to $3500 a year for "qualified pet care expenses," according to The Examiner. The broad expenses would include care as well as veterinary care but not any money spent towards the acquisition of the pet, which must be a “legally owned, domesticated, live animal.”
The bill will likely be looked at with stern eyes as it makes its way through the congressional process. It was introduced by Michigan Republican Rep. Thaddeus McCotter, who said the current major healthcare proposal will encourage "government-encouraged euthanasia."

Yes...by all means...let's give tax breaks to pet owners during the middle of a recession. Great idea.
And congress wonders why all of these town hall folks are so irate.
Per example: McCain's healthcare plan only called for $2,500/year per individual and this GOP moron wants to give $3,500......for pets???
I love dogs and cats as much as the next person but this government sugar daddy crap is starting to get ridiculous.
This is from the Onion right?
Love Malingering's picture. That tax relief would have come handy when we were taking care of our old furry dude (who died at the grand age of 23.) We used to call him our luxury fur because he sure was $$$ maintenance. We don't regret it, though: we bought him an extra lease on life.
So, how much tax credit do I get if I marry my “legally owned, domesticated, live animal?” This is the dumbest thing I've heard in a while. Also, won't this lead to people hoarding animals in poor conditions just for the tax break?
I have to wonder if this wasn't some sort of inside joke on McCotter's part.
Even so I think that would probably irritate me even more.
I'm sure his constituents would rather he be spending his time in more productive ways than thinking up jackassery shit like this.
