Rogue Theater presents Shorts & Sweets tonight at 10:30 pm. It’s an evening of four world premiere one-act plays with three servings of sweets (cookies, cupcakes etc.) that keep to the plays’ themes. On the program are: Keeping Pace by Robin Rothstein, Weedwhaker Tuesday by Amanda Mauer, Free by Craig Pospisil and I Hate L.A. by John Pollono. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 10:30 pm until Aug. 22. Tickets are $15.

La Luz de Jesus Gallery holds an artist reception tonight from 8-11 pm for its August Group Show, featuring the work of Jessica Dalva, Scott Holloway, Misato Otake and Jasmine Worth.

Julian Davies (The Cheese Store) and DJ Cuz’n Roy play host at the Echoplex to the 43rd edition of the Irregular Wine Tasting, an evening of adult beverages with a twist. Here’s how they describe the event, “This evening we pair five wines from Planet Vagina with four suicides from Suicide Club, then segue seamlessly into SuicideGirls presents Summer Suicide, featuring “beautiful naked punk rock, goth & emo girls with tattoos & piercings.” Tickets are $20. JAZZ
LACMA’s Friday Night Jazz series continues tonight at 6 pm with Trio Loco at 6 pm. Bassist Jimmy Haslip (co-founder of The Yellowjackets) and guitarist Jeff Richman (Manhattan Transfer, Billy Cobham) bring their contemporary jazz trio to LACMA. Their music includes original works by Richman and Haslip and features Pat Metheny drummer Danny Gottlieb. The event is free and no reservations are needed.
FRIDAY
Celebrate First Friday on Abbot Kinney in Venice tonight until 10 pm. The neighborhood merchants stay open late, and there’s free music as well as food and beverages available. At Stronghold Speakeasy, there’s a free "From New Zealand With Love" event that features wines from select New Zealand wine growers, New Zealand's most famous beer, Steinlager Pure, and premium New Zealand spirits. DJ Jeremy Sole's (KCRW, Afro Funke', Musaics) spins. The event’s sponsored by Air New Zealand and matchmaking site TheLEK.com to celebrate the world's first Matchmaking Flight, on Air New Zealand on Oct. 13.
