Pencil This In: Comedy for a Cause, Free Movie Night for National Night Out

FILM
Councilman Greig Smith hosts a movie night tonight -- National Night Out -- with free hot dogs, popcorn and "Kung Fu Panda" tonight at Northridge Park. The dogs come courtesy of CPAB and LAPD and will be served at 6:30 pm. The movie starts at nightfall. There will also be free popcorn until 9 pm, free drawings for prizes, face-painting for kids, booths with public safety information, LAPD mounted police and underwater diving units, games, activities, and more. CARTOONS*
Animation historian Jerry Beck presents Beatnik Animation Night tonight at 8 pm at the Silent Movie Theater. The cartoon shorts he’s screening reflect the Beat Generation and will include Stan Freberg's Three Little Bops, Real Gone Woody (with Woody Woodpecker), and the Wildman of Wildsville (voiced by Lord Buckley). In addition, you'll catch Popeye, Foghorn Leghorn and the Beatles. Be there or be square, daddy-o!

Echo Park Film Center presents the series “Cinema Speakeasy” tonight at 8 pm with a screening of Visioneers. Jared Drake makes his directorial debut with this quirky black comedy set in the near future, where workers from The Jeffers Corporation--the largest corporation in the history of the world--are just spontaneously combusting. The company became the hugest ever thanks to their strict philosophy of happiness through mindless productivity. “But when people begin literally exploding due to unhappiness, Jeffers Corporation Level Three Visioneer George Washington Winsterhammerman (Zach Galifianakis) begins to fear that his time will come sooner rather than later.’ $5 at the door but you have to know the password...”

COMEDY
Comedian Jo Koy and his foundation presents a “Hilarity for Charity” event tonight at 8:30 pm at the Jon Lovitz Comedy Club at Universal Citywalk. The stand-up comedy show features Koy with other guests. Proceeds from the ticket sales will be donated to The Children's Hospital of Orange County. Tickets are $30.

TALK
Architects Steven Ehrlich and Leo Marmol are guests of ALOUD at the Central Library series at 7 pm. They’ll discuss “Why Design Matters” and “how do notions of social responsibility and sustainability, in terms of design, impact the response to the growing density of Los Angeles and beyond?”
