While most expected Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince to reign at the box office for a second straight weekend, it was animated kiddie flick G-Force that broke through and topped the charts ($32M). Harry Potter was a close second ($30M | $221.8M) while the rightfully pilloried The Ugly Truth raked in $27M and further established Katherine Heigl as a certified big screen star. Adoption horror flick Orphan underperformed to the tune of $12.7M which should spare Americans further exposure to that creepy-looking little girl.
Ice Age 3: More Ice Age continued to print money ($8.2M | $171.2M) as did Transformers 2: Needless Racist Sequel ($8M | $379M) and The Hangover ($6.4M | $247M). After that it was The Proposal ($6.4M | $140M), Public Enemies ($4.1M | $88M) and Bruno ($2.7M | $56.5M). In limited release, In the Loop had a strong start ($25,125 per theater) while Shrink did reasonably well ($8500 per). The Answer Man, however, cratered ($2167). (500) Days of Summer added theaters and had yet another great week ($19,176). See it today!
