There's Erik and Kelley Knuzten with their homegrown revolution in Silver Lake. There's also Silver Lake Farms. Over in Torrance, a woman named Judi Gerber writes the LA Farm Girl blog about urban, local and sustainable farming and gardening, local food, victory and community gardens . Out in South Pasadena, there's the Urban Homestead. And today we learn of another large urban farming operation in Altadena.

Kazi Pitelka, a musician with the LA Opera, began by planting a small vegetable garden in 1996 when her family moved into the home. Over time, her 1-acre property turned into a larger operation. She's growing over 100 different fruits, chickens and an overwhelming amount of vegetables. "Once you start producing your own food, you find out what real food tastes like," she told the Pasadena Star News. "Eggplant or broccoli fresh out of the garden are different creatures altogether. Fresh eggs, eating a peach right off the tree, grabbing an apricot that you have to lean over to take a bite so the juice doesn't roll down your face."

A tour of her home will be offered Sunday evening as part of a fundraiser for Altadena Heritage called the Golden Poppy Urban Homestead Fete.

I just planted my first urban veggies and can't tell you how excited I am to eat the results in a couple of months.

I'm eating a homegrown strawberry as I read this. ;)

Im all for home grown. My mom has a garden outside with tons of veggies and fruits..Heck ya they taste better...Mmm I want some squash!

Homegrown tomatoes will convert even the surliest naysayers.

Another cool urban garden is :
The Learning Garden

(Venice High's "teaching garden". It's pretty incredible)
