Rarely do major film studios finance films as ambitious as Watchmen and with the middling success the film enjoyed, it's likely to become rarer still. Which is a damn, damn shame. Zach Snyder's adaptation of Alan Moore's seminal graphic novel has its share of issues, but he did manage to get Dr. Manhattan, Rorschach and Nite Owl (II) just about perfect which is a huge triumph. Watchmen is a film that deserved greater financial support from the public. Let's hope it finds that support on DVD. I mean seriously, do we want more films like Watchmen or more shit like Transformers 2: Revenge of Shit. Vote with your dollars, people!

Thankfully, the public was able to step up and give the lovely and weird Coraline some much-needed box office juice. I know that there are a lot of you out there that reflexively resist this type of movie (e.g. stop-motion animation), but give Coraline a chance and you will be richly rewarded. I say this without a hint of sarcasm-- Dakota Fanning and Teri Hatcher (whom I usually both despise) give two of the finest voice-over performances in recent years. If you want something a little more conventional, but still suitably quirky, then try out The Great Buck Howard. I mean, isn't any movie featuring the great Ricky Jay at least sorta good?

"Revenge of Shit"--just spit-taked all over my computer. That is hilarious.
The only thing ambitious about Watchmen was Zack Snyder trying to adapt something when the author steadfastly didn't want it to be adapted. Other than that, it's just another computer-generated movie which mistakes mimicry for style and slow-motion for dramatic tension.

I think you are looking at it from a different perspective than I am. Most studios would like at a project like Watchmen and try to homogenize it into something more palatable to a mass audience (e.g. big stars! PG-13 rating!). The fact that both Warners and Snyder agreed to adhere quite closely to Moore's original creation is -- for me, at least -- an ambitious choice.
