A Big Success: One More Day to Parade on L.A.'s Staircases

Nearly 75 people yesterday joined Dan Koeppel and friends on the first of two days in The Big Parade, a 40-mile walk from downtown to the Hollywood Sign up and down more one hundred neighborhood stair cases. They begin the last leg of their journey this morning after camping in a Silver Lake pocket park next to the Music Box Stairs.

If you've got an itching to join, we recommend you do--there's a lot of fun to be had. Today's trip will take explorers 21.5 miles and over 64 staircases. And remember this: to join them doesn't mean you have to do the whole thing. Anyone can come and go as they please, where they please and it's pretty easy to do so. Just take a look at today's time table, the map and read the instructions and you'll be set for Los Angeles' quintessential urban hike. Enjoy!

I have to say as someone who grew up on most of these very same stairs (to this very day I still have dreams about concrete stairs that seem to reach to the sky) this seems like a brutal hike, even in less challenging heat. Climbing up Curran Street, back down to Echo Park Ave, up Cerro Gordo and then down Donaldson is something I did when I was kid, I cannot imaging doing that all day long now. I can only say I am totally impressed that these folks are doing it now.

It definitely was challenging. I suggested that maybe for next year there either or also be this very same route, but split up over 4 weekends, one section a weekend. But that said, there was something very cool about sticking with the group for a long time and hitting at the end, then celebrating with some margaritas in Silver Lake. Lots of new friendships and new people to meet!

i did the hike yesterday with some friends- had an awesome time. i'm in pain today but am totally looking forward to next year's parade!

I did the hike today through Silverlake, so many stairs and history. I'll probably be in pain tomorrow but like greengelato looking forward to next year!

Totally worth being sore and tired today. It was really awesome and so glad I did it. :)

It was lots of fun. I'm up for trekking other stairways and neighborhoods we're lucky to have in LA. Photos:
