Weekend Movie Guide: It's a Harry Potter Weekend!

LAist has already seen the excellent Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and this weekend the rest of Los Angeles will likely follow suit. One small quibble, though: how do you leave out the [ ] of [ ]? It would have been one of the most powerful scenes in the entire series. That said, the realization of the pathetic Horace Slughorn is fantastic; the scene in the cave is top-notch; and the Quidditch play (especially Ron's Keeper sequence) has never been better. Thank God, the Deathly Hallows is being split into two films. Lots to cover!

Are you the type that doesn't like romantic comedies, but are often compelled to go by your significant other? (500) Days of Summer might just fit the ticket. It's wistful and lovely and will stay with you long after you have left the theater. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel are just wonderful in it. Death in Love looks like a direct-to-DVD film. Whatever happened to Josh Lucas? One could say the same about Homecoming and Mischa Barton. Boy, the shy, quietly powerful actor of Lost and Delirious has really slipped, huh?

500 days of summer was fun. definitely. love the LA love. they keep trying to sell it as a "not-so-typical-indie" but they use some of the same plot devices/archetypes. it's just well done.
