UC Employees to Rally Today at UCLA Against Proposed Cuts

Unionized employees of the University of California will rally today at UCLA in Westwood in protest against proposed cost-cutting measures that will see the, losing work hours and funds for operating costs, according to the Daily News.

The proposed plan could "affect as many as 150,000 public employees," on the ten UC campuses, including professors and staff who could be required to accept 11 to 26 unpaid furlough days per year as part of efforts to work with a drastically reduced budget. Their Board of Regents recently held an emergency session, during which UC's President Mark G. Yudof endorsed the controversial plan that soon drew criticism from the unions.

Many UC employees hope instead to have the cuts be enacted higher up in the ranks. One worker suggested "the UC should chop from the top and end excessive executive compensation."
