It's about time, no? After weeks of rejecting bogus medical marijuana dispensaries, three LA City Councilmembers brought forth a motion to explore a tax on legal medical marijuana sales in the city. “In this current economic crisis, we need to get creative about how we raise funds. A tax on medical marijuana could enable the city to continue providing services we might otherwise have to cut,” said Councilwoman Janice Hahn. Retired LAPD officer and West Valley Councilman Dennis Zine said "Part of becoming a legitimate business in the City of Los Angeles means supporting local government by paying a fair share of municipal taxes.” Councilman Bill Rosendahl also brought forth the measure. A motion for a resolution in support of H.R. 2835, the Medical Marijuana Patient Protection Act, which allows for state law to prevail with regard to medical marijuana use, was also introduced.

Good idea.
One suggestion to City Council Members; Don't make it an outrageous amount or you'll only succeed in putting it right back on the black market. I suggest the same as 9.75% sales tax that is on everything else.
Or maybe the city could learn how to be a better steward with the money they have than thinking of news ways to tax us.
I'll agree with you there VT, but keep in mind Arnie is already talking about chopping state contributions to city governements to balance the state budget. That has Villaraigosa and a lot of other mayors in the state very nervous and preparing to do battle with Sacto.
Is there are tax on prescription drugs at the pharmacy? I'm thinking you can only tax it if folks are using it recreationally and as jrb mentioned that would simply send recreational users back to the black market. Which means it would just punish the folks who are actually sick and have legit prescriptions. I think it can only be taxed if recreational use is legal.
What kind of tax/fees do the dispensaries pay to the city?
I only buy at dispensaries that display a sales tax permit, and charge me sales tax.
Other fees, I don't know about.
I love how the Governator raids local and school funds, promises to pay it back, reneges, supports tax-free yacht loophole then spouts with all sorts of blowhard disingenuous "No new taxes!"
More like "Pass the buck!" Are the people of California really falling for his two card Monte? He's somehow managed to keep up with the crazy spending AND cut services. That's where bogus tax cuts for the filthy rich get this state.
Anyone feeling any "trickle down"? Didn't think so. (ummm, besides the stuff in the ear that *isn't* rain.)
"After weeks of rejecting bogus medical marijuana dispensaries"
This is rather irresponsible, Zach. On what basis are you alleging that these dispensaries are "bogus"? In fact, my favorite dispensary is in danger of closing. And it is my favorite because they already pay taxes and they give back to the community and they are actually about compassion and not just out to make a profit. I know several chemo patients who will be impacted if the city closes it down.
It's what the city is doing that is bogus. The moratorium was a bullshit copout, a way to kick the can down the line some more and avoid responsibility a while longer. And they wrote the hardship exemption and other loopholes in themselves. Now they are pretending like they never included these provisions, and are denying all applications out of hand. No deliberation. No due process. Not even a semblence of an investigation of the value of these individual dispensaries to the community. And they're only allowing these groups 60 seconds to speak in their own defenses. It's a sham. Get it straight.
Closing these clubs will impact the economy as well. These dispensaries are paying rent all over the place, and employing lots of people. Landlords all over the city will be out lots of money, people will be out of jobs, and sick folks will have less options. Why?
And why raise money on the backs of sick people? Why not legalize for recreational use and tax that? I haven't heard a single reasonable reason why we shouldn't. It's about fucking time.
Hey Ben,
I was just using bogus as in the eyes of the current law. Sorry to offend. Like you, I know there are some real deal places being shut down at the same time places that are bogus in more than one way like that that House of Kush in Venice that actively approaches people on the streets to solicit purchases. Once again, sorry for the word choice on that.
I just noticed a new dispensary opened up in Chatsworth on Topanga Canyon and Devonshire. Now you Valley folks don't have to drive as far.
Wait, they already charge sales tax? Now I'm confused.
Some dispensaries do and some don't. Some dispensaries don't even have a business license. I'm sure there are probably some that are not much more than a pot dealer who decided to open a store front.
I avoid buying at ones that I think are not legit. I think those only hurt the cause.
