As a group of cyclists were riding through Highland Park last night, they encountered a group of alleged gangster's who approached the cyclists and started throwing glass bottles and vases, some following the riders with shovels.
According to witnesses, many participants rode through the area as fast as possible upon hearing the commotion, but when the assailants attempted to take a girl's pushed a girl off her bike several riders went back to help her.
Accounts indicate that a bike was stolen and it was around that time that a rider was shot in the back. The victim was wearing a bag Camelback on his back, which seems to have shielded him from the full force of the impact, and is reported to be in stable condition, according to police.
This incident was one of two cyclist shootings that occurred early Saturday morning; another rider was shot in Pacoima around 1:15 am, underwent surgery at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center and is expected to survive, according to abc7.com.

That's messed up, I hope the rider recovers. I'm going to pre-empt all the predictable idiotic racist or anti-bike commenters and say that we shouldn't extrapolate too much from the marginal.
I ride my bike through Northeast L.A. through known Avenues territory by myself all the time. You have nothing to fear, last night seemed to be some kind of perfect storm.
it was a very intense situation. yes a guys bike was stolen and the guy who was shot is alive and kickin'.
Here's hoping the injured recover quickly! I love the general concept of these rides...not intending to offend, but why would anyone think its a good idea to bike through high crime areas at 1am? Do they at least notify the police of where they ride? Just curious.
the gentrification of the neighborhood does not mean its becoming better, it just means its becoming better segregated. this shooting is not unique at all, the same probably would have happened whether they were in cars, walking down the street or taking public transportation en mass. growing up in the area you can expect at least one drive by to take place at your elementary school but they trained us from the beginning, drop and put your head down. maybe they should start that training for everyone who wants to hang out in the neighborhood. thank you cholos for being yourself towards everyone. this is the making the a perfect storm as the previous post mentioned. when a large group of people enter and make their presence known in a gang territory they should expect harassment, especially very violent harassment, and take more precaution than just riding in groups. a gang is a group that goes around late at night in their neighborhood. the shooting gang most likely saw this as another encroachment on their territory and not as targeting innocents biking through.
I don't think this ride had much to do with gentrification. Most of the riders aren't people who just moved it or want to move into the neighborhood. They come from all around L.A. and they aren't all just a bunch of Silver Lake hipsters, contrary to popular belief. Also I think nearly half the people who rode were of color, mostly Latino.
vases?
See I think everyone is missing the point this this whole situation.
When cycling, wear a backpack to carry your stuff, Do not use panniers.
Either way, I'm glad the cyclist is ok, I have to say it takes a real man to shoot an unarmed person in the back. What a pussy.
where are the cops?
Im glad the cyclist is ok...My brother was on that ride and witnessed everything. I hate cholos!Stupid Avenues!
I've seen ExP tags in Angelino Heights, but they don't seem to be anything like the Aves. I've gotten home at 3 am after group rides and not felt any kind of danger, but maybe that's a bad thing. Seems like those riders had no idea they were encroaching on gang territory in semi-large numbers that would be viewed as a threat.
Sounds like another area that needs to have "the injunction" imposed.
