After a year of disappointments, the Los Angeles Marathon is considering a new route that would begin at Dodger Stadium and end in Santa Monica, according to the Santa Monica Daily Press:
Marathon officials are planning a new route for the 2010 race, starting the course for its 25th anniversary at Dodger Stadium and ending it in Santa Monica, hoping to breathe life into an event that in years past has lost some of its luster."The New York Marathon finishes in Central Park and travels through all five boroughs," Peter Abraham, the creative director for the L.A. Marathon, said. "If you want to really experience New York as a runner, what better way is there?
"The L.A. Marathon should similarly reflect all the things great about the Los Angeles area and travel to many different neighborhoods and end up at the beach."
This past year, the race became politicized when the Los Angeles City Council dictated that it could only take place on a holiday Monday, avoiding traffic conflicts with religious institutions. With choices slim, Memorial Day was chosen and the route used was less than stellar.

isn't the LA marathon though? it should end in LA and not santa monica. boo. i don't like it. but i like the dodger stadium part. :)
I always feel in regards to tourism, Los Angeles should be marketed as a region and not a bordered city with 88 other ones in the county. Of course, the city actually OWNS the marathon, so that could be a complication. Despite the greater good for the region. Marathon runners do like to finish near their hotel room, so this could balloon SaMo's transient occupancy tax.
If push comes to shove, maybe Venice as the ending point?
I was going to say - Venice or Marina del Rey - run it under the 91 so residents can still have access, run along the Ballona wetlands and end up in the Marina (is Chase Burton park big enough?) or Playa del Rey.
Can they run through Culver City and down the Ballona bike path, or is there a regulation on course width?
Not sure on width requirements.
For what it's worth, Marina Del Rey is not within the city of Los Angeles, it's unincorporated. You might have already known that, but I just wanted to make sure that's clear because I know people who live there and never knew that. That fact blew their minds.
True... I remember learning it when that ORK poster of LA came out; a mess with big chunks of the west side missing.
Venice or Hermosa Beach would be good end points.
Oh great. Now there won't be any mass transit at the starting OR ending points.
What was wrong with the Universal City to Downtown route again?
No. Just...no.
