Crimes within one mile of Hollywood and Highland between last Saturday and Tuesday, according to the LAPD Crime Map
With tens of thousands of crimes in Los Angeles, the LAPD's crime map tool will never be 100% perfect, but missing 40% of all reported crimes is a far cry from being complete. Thanks to an LA Times investigation--the second about the LAPD's touted crime map--today we learn that 26 homicides, 137 rapes and over 10,000 other nonviolent thefts remain off map, but not intentionally says the LAPD.
It seems to be an error in the coding and although the police department resubmitted thousands of crimes and the website vendor in charge of the site said they fixed a glitch, reporters found that the missing crimes are still not there.
The map is intended to help residents in community policing, to spot trends and to be more aware of their neighborhood. Over 10,000 crimes missing is detrimental to that mission. $362,000 was paid for the online tool, but all of the money came privately, via the Los Angeles Police Foundation.

I wonder if these crimes were simply left off the map or whether they've been left off of official statistics. If they're not reported as official statistics (ie, overall crime rate), that's even worse IMO. If it's just a map data error, that's not so bad.
I remember sometime last year the Times did a story that all crimes that didn't have accurate location data associated with it were showing up at 1st and Main in Downtown, making Downtown's crime rate look sky-high. From that story, it was said that LAPD moved all those locations off somewhere far away so they wouldn't show up in Downtown anymore. Is this what happened?
Thank you La Times for reporting on this finally. My Girlfriend and I BOTH had our cars burglarized in the past 2 months in front of our place near Abbot Kinney in Venice. Neither crime ever showed up, though we both filed police reports for our renters insurance. Very Few of the numerous Burglaries that occurred from March 1-May 1 in Venice showed up either. I don't have much experience to make judgments, but I've watched The Wire. I see no reason why the books wouldn't be just as easy to cook in real life as on TV.
