NoHo Public Art Gateway Ready for its Debut

Tonight is the official unveiling of Peter Shire's latest public work of art. Over in the NoHo Arts Distrct, a gateway on Lankershim has been erected at Huston will welcome people to the neighborhood just like the arch in Chinatown and The Wave on Wilshire at the LA-Santa Monica border. LAist wrote about this project last week and readers in the comments section have not been thrilled. A ceremony is scheduled for tonight at 7 p.m.

I drove under it today, and I must say its a nice idea, it looks cheap and tacky. NOHO has been improving steadily over last 3 years that I have been living there, and this art exhibit should improve NOHO's looks and esthetics's but it does just the opposite.

Maybe I am wrong but in my opinion it needs more work, make it nice.

THAT'S MY STREET!!

Kevin and I walked by the other night and saw this monstrous metal madness and were all like WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT????? So weird! So weird.

I drove under this today on my way to work and thought it was pretty ugly. I suppose it could be worse, but I can't quite think of how.

Do we know how much this thing cost?

Hate to say it, but it kinda looks like mall art. ;

The entryway to the NoHwd rail station is actually awesome though.

"The" refers to a separate, mural clad entryway to the rail, as one submerges into the transit abyss via the escalators.

Christ, that's horrid. I am so tired of "NoHo" attempting to brand itself as "arty" because it's got a crappy comedy club, three vintage shops, and the El Portal.

In actuality, NoHwd is quite "musicy", because of all the recording studios and practice spaces, yet that doesn't market quite as well to the pottery barn set.

Well, NoHo has like 20 theaters in a mile. FYI. That's pretty impressive. Agreed that it's crappy and embarrassing. Shame on whoever put that junk pile up.

Good call: totally looks like mall art.

I hate to say it too, but I really don't like this art piece. I can appreciate art, but this contraption is just not easy on the eyes to say the least. The artist should have used cues from around the neighborhood and used a less offending color.

I am a resident of this community and I don't approve of this thing. I was really excited to hear we were getting a gateway to drive under, but this makes me feel less proud of my community. I'm sad to say the least. I had a lot of hopes for this thing.

I would venture to say that NoHo is almost as "dancy" as it is "arty" or "musicy."

Just think how amazingly dumb this is going to look 10 years from now.

By the way... I just threw some stuff into my car. I'm calling it "art."

I live 500 feet from this monstrosity and I am still in shock. I LOVE my neighborhood and can’t believe that someone thinks that is art. It looks like it has been misplaced from the Universal Studios Nickelodeon section. I am aghast that anyone would pay for this much less actually put it up. The people who made this decision obviously don’t live here. I think I can hear my property value dropping as I type. "Arty", how about "lame". Oh wait there is one positive thing. Now when people are coming over that have never been to my house I can say "just turn left at the hideous neon overhang". They will never miss the turn again!

So many critics.
So few ideas

Here's an idea, instead of going all 80's trendoid with the art, which only *ever* worsens with age - why not start doing some *classic* or retro pieces.

IE: You rarely hear people dogging the tasteful art of say, the Paris Metro stations - because they weren't based on a flash in the pan fleeting regional style - there was some substance and tradition behind them.

(And yes, I am aware of the contradictory angeles tradition of tearing every single *building* down that's more than ten years old.)

Still, just a thought. Go classic. ; ]

I agree! It would've been nice to see an Art Nouveau- or Art Deco-inspired gateway a la the Paris Metro. Or they could've gotten ideas from San Diego's lighted signs for Hillcrest and North Park; they're kind of like the Santa Monica Pier sign.

That being said, I don't completely hate the new gateway; I think it's tolerable but I could do without the neon yellow.

Agreed. They should have gone with something more classic or even more streamlined. This thing is just clunkity-clunk. I have no better words to describe it.

I love my neighborhood, but this just doesn't add anything to it. I drove under it yesterday heading south and the words on the back of it read "OH ON." Come on people!
