Photos: A Trip to the Glendale Farmers' Market

Inspired by a panel we caught at the recent Dwell on Design conference, and some time spent ogling recipes in three beloved cookbooks (The Santa Monica Farmers' Market Cookbook, The San Francisco Ferry Plaza Farmers' Market Cookbook, and Fresh From the Farmers' Market) last Thursday we headed over to Glendale to check out their weekly market. Occupying a stretch of Brand Boulevard, the market was focused mostly on multiple tables of fresh locally-sourced produce, and enriched by the presence of folks with breads, nuts, and fresh juices. It's a modest market, but we were able to work our way from one end to the other efficiently, sample some of the best items the growers had to offer, and fill our bag with what wound up being a week's worth of fresh produce (and bread) for less than $20.

In season right now you'll find beautiful fresh berries from Oxnard, summer squash, sweet corn, tomatoes (including the many intriguing Heirloom varieties you may be growing in your own yard) and more. Summer is a time of great bounty, so if you've got the chance to skip the supermarket, support your local growers at your closest farmers' market. A list of certified markets in LA County is available online. You can be easily inspired (like the pros, such as Chef Ben Ford) to cook using the produce that comes from the fields of Southern California, and find that there's no reason to get your sub-par strawberries or chemically preserved bread from that big box store you're always groaning about having to visit.

Beautiful. Now I'm sad that I'm sitting at this here desk.
Although, when there is the SaMo farmer's market closer, I would like to be there even more!
Very nice.

One of the best is the Sunday Hollywood Farmer's Market @ Ivar.

(An easy 2 block walk from the Hollywood Vine Red Line rail station.)

Yes, it means you've got to get up and out by at least Noon on a Sunday, but it's totally worth it. (Lots of cool funky people milling about as well.)

SCRUMPTUOUS photography! YUM!
