BOOKS*
Filmmaker David Lynch and musicians Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse collaborated on a special CD, photography and book project, which LAist told you about last month. Tonight, the trio are signing their limited-edition book Dark Night of the Soul at Book Soup at 8 pm. They’ll also sign ONE ITEM in addition to a purchased copy of the book. This is not a ticketed event, so get there early. Attendance is on a first-come-first-served basis.
ANIMATION
Animation historian Jerry Beck presents a screening and program of Frank Tashlin Toons tonight at 8 pm at The Cinefamily at the Silent Movie Theater. Animator Tashlin’s imprint can be seen in various cartoons/characters from the classic studios -- Warner Bros., Looney Tunes, Merry Melodies and Disney -- from Daffy Duck to Donald Duck, and many more in between. Beck will bring rare prints of Tashlin's best animation. Tickets are $13.
HIKING
Full moon hiking adventures are brought to us tonight by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy. One easy, two-hour excursion starts at 7:30 pm at Temescal Gateway Park in the Pacific Palisades. Also at 7:30, another easy hike begins in Santa Clarita’s Towsley Canyon Park. At 8:30 pm, the moonlit hits the trail in Franklin Canyon (a moderately strenuous hike). These events are free, just remember to bring the parking fee.
THEATRE
Tuesday nights at 8 p.m., Theatre West presents readings of new plays by the company’s playwrights and performed by the company’s actors. Admission is free and no reservations are necessary. On stage tonight is a comedy written by Victoria Vidal “What Are Friends For?” Sometime in the not-too-distant future, two middle-aged women invent a lotion to cure the planet of war and violence. But one of the women loses the formula -- and then the hunt begins with the help of a flashy Latina psychic and an African queen.
SWING
All summer long at Universal CityWalk, Tuesday nights at 7:30 pm are meant for swing and rockabilly. Hosted by Brad "Martini" Chambers from MartiniInTheMorning.com, professional dance instructors will conducting FREE swing lessons twice at night (7:30 and 8:45 pm). On the bill tonight are the Wiseguys.
