After much pushing and prodding by the public and media, Metro finally succumbed, quietly launching Google Transit this past weekend. Go ahead and play, it's like we're in a real big city now, catching up with most other major ones.
Update: Metro is being coy and says although it launched this weekend, there's nothing official yet. "We're not at the point of making an announcement," explained Spokesperson Dave Sotero, noting that there is no formal relationship. He said he could not go into details, but said the functionality should not be turned off and characterized it not as a launch, but rather as a data test.

I noticed this while I was planning a trip on Saturday - and thought I had somehow missed the big announcement!
now i can easily justify driving to work every day. google transit predicts a 55+ minute trip that takes my car only 20 -- and the westside subway cannot come soon enough.
I wonder when they will get the ladot's commuter express in this mix.
Finally!! Google Transit was really helpful with my trip to NY (subways) last month.
Ummm, maybe the MTA doesn't want people to easily track and document, the lines that consistently *don't run*. ; ]
It seems to exclude the Metro Blue Line service, however.
Try mapping from eastern Long Beach to Santa Monica - it has you take the bus the entire way. *shudder*
Where's that westside subway?!
best long beach to santa Monica =
blue line train to
santa monica big blue bus 10 freeway bus (non-mTA)
The route I would take seems less practical from Google.. from Pasadena to Venice Blvd, metro.net says Gold line -> Union Station -> 333, which is a simplier route, but Google says Gold line -> Chinatown -> 83 -> 333.. one more bus means one more chance of missing a connection.
I've updated the headline with "(Metro Calls it Data Test)" just so we all don't rag on Google and Metro for non-perfection. But keep the suggestions/inconsistencies coming, it can't hurt to help them improve it!
google will in fact, one day, inherit the earth.
Thanks for the "quietly launching" link. I know the system's not perfect yet, but it's better now than last week.
It will be even better when all the other local mass transit systems get their data included.
This is a great tool to use. LA is advancing bit by bit.
Awesome. This feature saved us so many times when I was in New York.
Now if they could put in a "bike" button that finds the best bike routes that would even be awesomer.
They had this feature for the Paris Metro and it was unbelievably helpful...So glad L.A. is finally catching up!
