Classical Pick of the Week: "Pop" Music

Music in film is one of the most important devices used in cinema today; this music has been ingrained in popular culture, to the point that most people could recognize the tunes. Also sprach Zarathustra, Ride of the Valkyries, Beethoven's 5th, are a few of the major works that come to mind. This week, you can hear a few of these tunes and more at several venues.

At the Hollywood Bowl, Kirill Karabits and the LA Phil perform a few works of Prokofiev, who happened to compose music for films. Peter and the Wolf was most recently heard on the Coke ad in the Super Bowl. Vladimir Feltsman, famous pianist and professor at Mannes, performs as the soloist for the piano concerto. On Friday and Saturday, the LA Phil performs works of famous composer Henry Mancini. This includes a selection of some of his most famous works, including "Pink Panther", "Moon River" and "Charade". Marina Del Rey kicks off the summer season with a performance of Carmina Burana, which is shown above. The concert is on Thursday at 9 PM. Also, the Asia America Symphony Association will perform Beethoven's 9th this Friday at the Walt Disney Concert Hall.
