City Will Pay for Police at Michael Jackson Memorial

michael_jackson_memorial-police.png Although the city is fighting a $534 million budget deficit, they will dip into special funds for extraordinary events such as Michael Jackson's memorial service planned for next Tuesday. The situation is reminiscent of when the LAPD spent $25,000 on an operation escorting Britney Spears from her home to the hospital, about 6 miles away. Of course, if private donors want to help out as some did with the Lakers parade, the city welcomes them with open arms.

Before people start complaining about this (and with good reason), I'd like to point out that the masses of people that will come down to LA will probably spend several times more that on food and souvenirs and whatnot.

Also, it's not like the police could simply ignore the security risk of having so many people together.

Or, they'll break shit and loot, which has proven to be the go-to behavior for L.A. residents when they gather in big crowds. Let's hope they actually do spend money and keep it classy since this will be the most internationally covered media event of 2009.

I doubt the Michael Jackson fan-freaks will take time away from praying Mecca-like towards Staples Center in order to cause any trouble.

PS. "Hella" is not a word. Stop it.

Any idea how many LAPD officers are working at the various Jackson locations (Staples/Holmby Hills/Encino)?

Maybe they could sell temporary billboardspace in the vicinity - to offset the police costs?

Hella people are going to watch the event on T.V.

At a memorial service, that would be tacky. That said, "tacky" is probably somewhere in the official name of the city of Los Angeles.

Umm, I'm fairly sure 'tacky' is actually written into the city charter.

If tackiness is truly a genuine concern, I'm sure subtler versions of product placement could be figured out.

It's not like the wolves aren't totally marketing every angle of the tragedy already.

Excellent. Let's replace the police paychecks with IOU slips written in crayon.

Written in crayon by the kids Michael Jackson molested?? Too Soon??

whoa whoa Way too soon. Try after Tuesday.
