Cow Tails or a State Budget Solution?

Not that cow tails are not important, but Gov. Schwarzenegger has a good point.

Early in the afternoon, he tweeted, "Instead of working on budget, the Legislature is about to debate whether cows can keep their tails while we're in a fiscal crisis." We just thought he was being Mr. Sassy Pants. Then a few hours later, he proved it with this video.

In case you're interested in the cow tail talk, it's Senate Bill 135 and it goes something like this:

Existing law makes it a misdemeanor for any person to cut the solid part of the tail of any horse in the operation known as "docking."

This bill would likewise prohibit the docking of cattle, as defined, except but would exclude from the application of the crime of docking emergency treatment performed, as specified , and reported to the Department of Food and Agriculture within 30 days . By expanding the scope of an existing crime, this bill would impose a state-mandated local program.

The bill's author, Sen. Dean Florez (D) of Central California, shot back saying that the Governor used "his time and the state’s resources mocking the prevention of animal cruelty." Why he didn't Twitter it to the world to hear, we have no idea.

yup... now we know why we could not get a decent budget.

What you guys fail to realize is that cow tails are the solution to the state budget.

Oh come on. This is like Prop 2 and Prop 8 - once does not preclude the other. We can have non-mutilated cow tails AND a state budget, you know.

The right wing talking heads love to use any opportunity to denigrate something and wedge people up.

Sadly, most people's snap reaction to this probably *will* be huh, those who opposes animal cruelty at a time like this are obstructionist wussies who hate America.

While they are thus ably distracted from issues like the State Parks fiasco, L.A.'s hidden graft (ie: court blocks on auditing city government), rampant corporate welfare, etc. etc.

And Prop 13 is 'sacred', we can't raise the lowball property tax on multi-million dollar mansions. Even if it bankrupts the state, let's shift the blame to those who care about animals.

People like treeVerb are the reason we are in this mess. The democrats have controlled California for as long as I can remember.SPEND SPEND SPEND.How about only spending what you have. What a novel idea.

Actually, Real Estate scam artists are responsible for much of the current California meltdown. Overpriced properties combined with predatory "junk-mortgages" all evaporated into thin air and took the heady state revenues with it.

Prop 13, (which among other things, froze property taxes on the astronomically rich), removed the foundation for funding services such as schools, no *stable* revenue system was devised to replace it. A classic example that "relying on an overspeculated free market" to fund basic human services is not pragmatic.

The right wing in this state just a few months ago fought bitterly for things such as " http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AISA-Rj2mzc"> Tax Free Yachts and Jets "! Hardly a responsible alternative.

The only thing that can fix the state's troubles is a massive restructuring of the SYSTEM itself - the rules and regulations, the supermajority, term limits, etc. *Everyone* in the state is going to have to compromise, roll up their sleeves and contribute in ways that they can (whether it be dollars or services).

To take a "musical chairs" approach of:
"Oh screw over *those* guys, but leave *my* pile intact isn't going to work anymore." Both sides do that.

While statements such as "liberals bad!" or "right wingers evil!" have a certain junk food thought appeal, they just make the problem worse. The more people try to oversimplify the problems, demonize with stereotypes, and place misguided blame and frustration upon the disenfranchised, the deeper this hole is going to get.

People will have to read between the lines of the softball puppet headlines that corporate-owned media feed us, or the golden state titanic will merely sink quite quickly, awash in a sea of blame.

treeVerb that is nothing but babble.Dems control this state and have for a long long time.Unions are strangling our state. You want more money for schools? What a crock.I sat on a school board for nine years. For the amount of days they work they are very well paid.About 85% of the money schools get goes to teachers, administrators and their benefits.Every year they get a raise based on COLA(cost of living allowance)The problem is you have fat cats at the top earning $80K+ and retiring with benefits courtesy of the taxpayer.QUIT wanting more tax dollars.Cut the social programs out.quit educating, feeding, and medicating illegal immigrants who send their money back to Mexico.Do you have a clue how many bussinesses have left this state for more friendly states?Obama wanted change and California is about to get it.
