On Monday, crews will begin construction on the LA River bike path, extending it further south towards downtown. The 2.5 mile stretch will go from Fletcher Drive to Barclay Street over an asphalt easement previously owned by the Army Corps of Engineers. The current path, running from the northern end of Griffith Park to Fletcher Drive is about 4.25 miles. The project is expected to take 6 to 7 months based on preliminary reports.

A formal breaking ground ceremony will take place on Monday morning with City Council President Eric Garcetti, Councilmember Ed Reyes and representatives from the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority.

Between Whitsett and Laurel Canyon is a path for everyone to use. Between Laurel Canyon and Radford is a meandering one. Between Fulton and Coldwater is a dirt path on both sides.

That's all that's open in the East Valley!

I wait and pray for the day when it will connect to the south side of the path and it will no longer take a convoluted path through industrial areas to ride all the way south. This is not quite there, but it's progress, finally.

8 more miles to go and we might have a bike path from Burbank all the way to long beach. Then if we can get the city of Burbank to link the L.A. River/Grifith Park path to the chandler path. When the Orangeline is done we will have a bike path from Chatsworth all the way to LongBeach.

My favorite part is still the Culver City section to the Sea.

There's a section that's about to begin construction in the west valley - from Mason to VanAlden. There's more info at LA Creek Freak: http://lacreekfreak.wordpress.com/2008/11/09/river-bike-paths-on-the-way-in-elysian-valley-and-reseda/

I thought the city was broke?
