Sample Street Food in a Neighborhood Setting at Mercado La Paloma

mercado_mural.jpg The Mercado La Paloma (the Dove Marketplace) is a former sweatshop on South Grand Avenue, and is now serving as a community project aimed at supporting area small businesses, and providing the community with access to health, education, social, and arts resources.

Tomorrow, Trekking L.A., the endeavor that facilitates local adventures in our global city, launches their season of events with an evening at the Mercado, with the help of GOOD Magazine. With your RSVP you can arrive to the marketplace tomorrow evening starting at 6 and taste food from Southeast Mexico, Thailand, and Peru, hear Son Jarocho music from Vera Cruz, Mexico, make a street art installation, and, most importantly, support arts and culture programs in our neighborhoods.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm sure no offense was intended, but just to be clear the restaurants at the Mercado are more than "street food" (and no offense at street food - but there's a certain connotation there).

A couple of these restaurants have been given stellar reviews by Pulitzer Prize winning critic Jonathan Gold.

Last month he said Mo-Chica may have the best ceviche in the world - and their dishes are elegantly presented. Gold said Mo-Chica chef Ricardo Zarate "is a Lima native who has spent most of his adult life cooking in high-end Japanese restaurants, at a well-regarded modernized izakaya called Zuma in London and as the executive chef at Wabi-Sabi in Venice."

Gold also reviewed Chichen Itza a while back and listed as one of the city's essential restaurant, saying he returns regularly. To learn more about the neighborhoods around USC and Exposition Park, visit UniversityParkFamily.com

Thanks for the extra info (and goodness knows LAist hearts J. Gold!). This looks like a wonderful event--GOOD & Trekking LA both happen to be calling it a Street Food event. Considering how marvelous "street food" can be, hopefully the attendees tomorrow will be in for a treat!
