Out with the old meters, in with hand-me-down bicycle racks called meter hitches. When the city last year began replacing parking meters with the new pay station ones, that either left headless meters or no meters at all along stress, which meant less options for bicycle parking. Then last night, as part of a pilot project between the Department of Transportation and Council President Eric Garcetti's office, came 52 new bicycle meter hitches on Hollywood Boulevard between La Brea and Vine.
“This new program will provide more bicycle parking to make it easier for residents and visitors who want to use bikes to get around the neighborhood,” said Garcetti in a statement. “We want to make it as easy and attractive as possible for people to ride a bike rather than drive a car, especially for short trips.”

These actually rock for two reasons -
1) One adaptive reuse is hella cool.
2)Most of their "fancy" racks f-up your tires if one uses them as designed (seasoned riders know better, yet newbies often WTF it.)
YAAAA!!! finally, something great! Garcetti Rocks even though he never wrote back to me! :)Get some in downtown pleaseeeeeee!
bicigirl; I noticed some of these out front of the downtown library this morning on 5th street. So hopefully more are on the way.
Good idea!
I guess our city council creatures aren't total screw ups.
I saw them and used them today.
The City Council is only as good as the people they represent. If you don't get involved they won't respond.
Thanks Mayor..er I mean...Council member Garcetti and LADOT.
I dunno. Leaving unused phone lines on and costing taxpayers over a million a year? It's not our job to make sure our money isn't being wasted like that. That's what we elect them for.
Yet with something like this, a few letters can sometimes get them motivated to do more. They're kinda like seals that way. ; ]
