Lions and Tigers and Bare Asses, Oh My!

The circus is coming to Orange County soon, but not before a show of a whole other kind hits town, which is due to take place midday tomorrow in the heart of Anaheim. The show is actually a protest organized by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) who will express their displeasure about what they believe is the unethical treatment of circus animals by "having one of its members, 32-year-old Melissa Sehgal, pushed through downtown Anaheim in a cage, nearly nude except for tiger-stripe body paint," according to the OC Register.

The cage will bear a sign that says "Wild Animals Don’t Belong Behind Bars." Sehgal, an Angeleno making the safari to Anaheim, says of her naked ambitions: "I'll gladly bare my skin if it will help expose Ringling's abusive treatment of animals."

Circuses have incurred the objections of animal activists for some time now, as have other area shows that involve the use of animals, like last year, when Santa Ana's Discovery Science Center's plan to put show elephant Tai inside a giant soap bubble was burst by the onslaught of protest. Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey bring their circus to the Honda Center July 15 to 26, which is what prompted PETA to hold their protest in Anaheim tomorrow at 11 a.m. at Center Street Promenade, which is next to Anaheim City Hall. "Circus owner Ken Feld has run full-page newspaper ads saying that PETA’s viewpoints are unfounded and its protests unjust," and area authorities have no objection to tomorrow's planned protest, "as long as [the participants] adhere to laws regarding public decency."

circuses are absolutely disgusting, i'm glad that some people are choosing to speak up about it.

I'm reminded of the circus elephant that went berserk in Honolulu and had to be put down after killing her trainer, August 22, 1994.

Elephants are fairly intellegent creatures. This one probably came to realize that she was going to be held captive made to do tricks for humans for the rest of her life, and decided she'd rather die instead.

I know PETA gets a lot of grief for doing these types of demonstrations, but I notice Cirque Bezerk is a circus that doesn't use animals that are held captive and would otherwise be living in the wild.

Perhaps the Cirque Bezerk type of circus is the circus for the new age, and the ones like Ringling Bros. are on their way out.

Let's hope.

Good work PETA.

"I know PETA gets a lot of grief for doing these types of demonstrations, but I notice Cirque Bezerk is a circus that doesn't use animals that are held captive and would otherwise be living in the wild."

That's pretty much the point behind Cirque du Soleil, too. Entertainment without the captive animals = good, clean, wholesome fun.

I never made that connection, but you're right.

As for PETA being exploitative, I suppose so but you could also call it fighting fire with fire.

Watch the newest Carl's Jr. commercial for their newest burger, and sure enough, there's a scantily clad model in a bikini laying on the beach with a hambuger on her belly.

Sex sells.

I'm not in favor of circus animals, but parading around a near-naked woman, in a cage, is itself more than just a little exploitative. I'm sure there will be many guys with cameras covering this "event".

Sex sells.

This probably won't be any more risque than Paris Hilton selling hamburgers for Carl's.

Are you unfamiliar with PETA? Because their modus operandi is using human "exploitation" to make people think about animal exploitation. Hence the "I'd rather go naked than wear fur" campaign and the (banned) sexy vegetables commercial.

Umm, i kinda think the db comment was meant to incite a collective "duh".

Boo an captive animals. Me *NO* like.
