THE BOWL
You know it's summer in LA when Highland in Hollywood becomes even more of a traffic nightmare than usual when the Hollywood Bowl "officially" opens. (We guess the annual Playboy Jazz Festival is the unofficial opening?) Tonight, there's a star-studded opening night gala with Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Josh Groban, who'll be inducted during the 10th anniversary of the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame. The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra will be conducted by Thomas Wilkins, with guest performers Roger Daltrey, Angélique Kidjo, Frederica von Stade and Trisha Yearwood. Tickets are $17-$103.
BRAZILIAN FEST
Across the street is the oft-overlooked Ford Amphitheatre, which will be hosting a Brazilian Summer Festival tonight at 8 pm. On stage dancing up a storm will be Mestre Amen’s Capoeira Batuque and the Vai-vai Sambaxé Dancers. Headlining the festival is singer Diogo Nogueira, with pianist Marcos Ariel opening the show. Remember the Ford’s grounds are open for picnicking two hours before the show. Tickets are $45 and $12 for children 12 and under.
AIR GUITAR
Do you picture yourself an air guitar god? Well size yourself up against the dudes who take to the Troubadour stage tonight during the LA regionals for the U.S. Air Guitar title. Doors open at 8 pm and tickets are $18. The winner will get to go to the U.S. finals in D.C. in August. The national champ goes to Finland to compete for the world title.
THEATRE
Carved in Stone a comedy by Jeffrey Hartgraves, makes its Southern California debut at Theatre Asylum tonight at 8 pm. A young writer Gryphon Tott dies and is sent to the afterlife lit lounge with notable (gay) writers Quentin Crisp, Tennessee Williams, Oscar Wilde and Truman Capote. (He knows it’s not hell because cocktail hours abound.) But one thing he can’t quite get is how he fits in with this crew...he always thought he was hetro. The play runs through August 9, 2009. Tickets are $25 on Fridays and Saturdays and $20 on Sundays.
MUSIC
UCLA Live closes the 2008-09 season with the festive Goran Bregovic and his Wedding and Funeral Band. A superstar in his native Balkans, he brings a rousing team of musicians and singers with him to produce a hodgepodge of gypsy music, mixed with his own electric guitar licks. It’s a little Klezmer, Middle Eastern, Greek and maybe Norteno...pretty much everything but the kitchen sink. He’ll play tonight and tomorrow night at 8 pm UCLA’s Royce Hall. Tickets are $28-$70. Students tickets are $15.
DANCE PANEL
The third annual Choreography Media Honors happens tonight at the Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood with a panel discussion that pays tribute to the craft of choreography in film and television by examining the impact of dance in mainstream media. Choreographers and producers from High School Musical, So You Think You Can Dance and the 81st Academy Awards® will discuss their work, moderated by Emmy®-award winning choreographer Daniel Ezralow. Tickets are $25.

I think I've decided to definitely walk to the bars on Cahuenga tonight.
This seems like the 50th year in a row when I am reminded of my inability to remember to plan in advance for the Brazilian Fest and thus, have to miss it. Aaaargh!!
