Villaraigosa Now Fundraising to Pay Off Parade

lakersparademap.png The official Lakers parade on Wednesday will cost $2 million, split evenly between the city and the Lakers. Of course, with the city scrapping every nickel and dime to save the city budget, the politicians are coming under fire. The LA Police Protective League is not happy and rightfully so considering employees citywide are being forced on furloughs and some will be laid off. "At a time of financial crisis, when the public expects -- and quite frankly should demand -- city leaders to be good stewards of every tax dollar, it is foolish for elected officials to favor spending 1 million tax dollars on a three-hour parade," the union's president said in a statement. Now Mayor Villariagosa is reportedly getting private donations and has raised a several hundred thousand dollars. While we're at it, can we change the route, too, Mr. Mayor?

Here's an idea... The Lakers pay to open up the Staples Center, invite the public for free, and Kobe and the others can elephant walk through the stands while Lakers fans burn the place down.

Another Lakers story... Can we put this story to rest?

I'm a little disappointed this website and other media outlets aren't covering the other big events that went down in Los Angeles County over the weekend (ie LA Pride, Special Olympics, Iranian Election Protests).

Umm, considering the current horrific economic climate,
I think wasting $1 million city dollars is quite newsworthy.

(But yes, it is rather disconcerting that the aforementioned events haven't emerged as frequently.)

How about looking at the revenue the lakers bring to LA every year and realizing that a million dollars isn't all that much money in the grander scheme of things.

Also, anyone caught looting/pillaging should be cuffed and displayed along the parade route for people to throw vegetables at.

Don't waste the vegetables. Throw rotten meat at those idiots. Definitely a good plan.

maybe for millionaires it's not.

yet for many ailing school districts
a million ain't chump change.

Can't we do what Staples enter does? Pimp this out like everything there?

Staples center presents the Nokia, Coors light, Wellsfargo Laker's Chiptole's Celebration parade. Brought to you by the former rubble that was once the pantry, LA Live, ESPN Zone and a special thanks to Trader Vic's tiki torches for starting things up. Admission $5

The city could get in on this whole thing. Sell their own laker flags at the event for $2 undercutting everyone else unloading theirs at $5
