The Shell Station at Olympic and Grand was looted, but things quickly got back to normal (Tom Andrews/LAist)
If you were in the Southpark area of downtown last night, it smelled of things burning. After the isolated incidents of chaos, a survey of the area found light damage just about everywhere with pockets of small businesses unfortunately hit by looters and those Fakers fans running amok for no reason than just doing that (CurbedLA has photos of a ransacked Lexus and blogdowntown has shots during and after, too).
Wednesday's parade is expected to cost the city of Los Angeles $1 million (another million will be spent by the Lakers), but we're sure last night's police response, the aftermath cleanup and local economic damages will add up just as high.
"Officers tonight used minimal levels of force..behaving very professionally," Chief William Bratton told Fox 11, calling the the revelers "knuckleheads" and "cowards." Eight officers were injured. After the 2000 Lakers win, which prompted riots, the LAPD said they had prepared themselves for last night.
Twelve government vehicles, six of which were Metro buses, were also damaged, reports the LA Times. One of those buses had every single window broken, including the front one. All passengers and the driver were reportedly unharmed.

Ricockulous
LAist, can you please post a little more thoroughly about the Laker CHAMPIONSHIP?
Yes, some idiots fucked some things up last night. Today, that appears to be the only image of LA you guys are promoting. Why? Are you so surprised that sometimes fools do foolish things?
How about a few pictures of the winning team? Or are you too busy for that?
i agree with butterfingers. And a picture of graffiti? How do we even know that wasn't there beforehand? How do we know this isn't just your average night in L.A.!? ha
Well I liveblogged the whole thing last night. I did a tiny follow up post like I did last year when the Lakers lost 131-92 in Boston. I'll be writing up something later on about what this all means to the Lakers. So hang in there.
This is exactly why left the THC Expo early and stayed in. I wish these jackasses would stay the fuck out of my neighborhood. I'm REALLY glad the Lakers don't win a world champonship that often if this is how their fans act.
Way to make a good impression on a non sports fan, you SHITHEADS!!!
The Lakers winning just made me and my girlfriend afraid to go out for fear of drunk drivers and general chaos. I think there should be coverage of these problems, it's a really disturbing trend that this is how people celebrate sports victories. I hope it's a long time before Lakers win another one, or better yet never, if this is how the fans are going to behave every time..
The police response was weak. Isn't it a goddamn shame that the LAPD will use rubber bullets and tear gas on a peaceful May Day celebration but not on a crowd full of brown trash destroying shit because their group of tall freaks can shoot a rubber ball into a hoop better than the other team?
"brown trash"?? what.the.fuck.
it's a goddamn shame that ignorant assholes like you exist.
Ignorant asshole? I'm browner that both of your collective schfinkters and I am ashamed that a bunch of wannabe cholo pendejos went out there simply to cause chaos. Did you guys not see the idiot waving the Mexican flag while the MTA bus was being vandalized?
exactly! Why not use the tear gas and rubber bullets on these ruffians ? Why save it for peaceful demonstrations? This is all backwards...
Brown trash? Really? There are many of us latinos who were appalled and angry at the idiots who were out to cause damage to our city, and I also agree LAPD chose the wrong occasion to exercise restraint. However, you clearly are no better than them. I wouldn't call you white trash, though. Rasict trash? Absolutely.
It's kinda sad how whenever someone points out that most of the idiots looting were brown they are automatically white and racist. Well guess again sweetie, I'm as Mexican as you are a dummy (hint: Very).
I agree with Deepfry here, in that I understand when they said, browntrash they weren't referring to every person of color. They happened to be referring to those idiots rioting downtown so don't get your panties in a bunch unless that was you, and if it was you then well deserved, it was a TRASHY thing to do.
so maybe it might be a good idea to leave color out of the commentary entirely. novel concept??
you don't do any of US any favors by making it ok to say things like that. just because you're mexican doesn't make it acceptable. and by the way, you didn't point out that "most of" them were brown...you said "full of brown trash"
i'm sorry, i didn't know this was a "who is more brown" competition.
just because i didn't rip on my own people doesn't mean i'm not ashamed of the behavior shown in this post. all you did with your response to mine was show more of your ignorance.
Color has everything to do with it! What does it say about us, as Latinos, when a mob of our youth goes out onto the streets and starts destroying shit over a BASKETBALL game. THAT doesn't do us any favors. It shows that there is an obvious problem in our neighborhoods and in our education system. We can't ignore that fact simply because not all Latinos in Los Angeles were partaking in the madness. I'm tired of this "victim" attitude minorities take when other people point out their flaws. Instead of wasting your time wagging your finger of liberal shame at people like me, go out and try to do your part in solving this problem of ours.
you should really stop making assumptions. how do you know what i do or don't do? what do YOU do about it? how do you volunteer? are you an educator? do you have any children you are trying to raise with better values? don't project on me. in no way was i expressing any kind of "victim" mentality. i'm the last person that you'd find falling in to that kind of bullshit.
part of fixing the problem is setting a better example, educating others when they show ignorance about a group of people, not perpetuating stereotypes, etc.
and no, color does not have everything to do with it. ignorance has everything to do with it and ignorance is absolutely not color-related.
You're the one that assumed I was a White KKK Member/Neo Nazi/Hitler incarnate simply because I expressed my outrage at the group of savages rioting. I guess calling someone an "ignorant asshole" falls under the et cetera part of "setting a better example, educating others when they show ignorance about a group of people, not perpetuating stereotypes, etc".
I'm sorry did I miss the news reports about rioting in Compton? Koreatown? The West Side? Glendale? If you can't see how the events of Sunday show that color has everything to do with it then you are lost forever.
please point out to me where i said, or even implied, that you were white, KKK, neo-nazi, hitler incarnate, or even racist, for that matter.
all i said was you were an ignorant asshole, which has nothing to do with the above. all you've done is prove me right.
Congrats on reducing the conversation to name calling. You are no better than the idiots rioting. At least they know they are uneducated and embrace it, unlike you who tries to hide your stupidity through name-calling. What a fucking child.
I completely agree that the behavior of these latinos doesn't do us any favors. It's downright embarrassing and it enrages me all the more because I have to be associated with ignorant, destructive behavior simply because we share the same race. The concept I have a problem with is that by saying "brown trash", you are implying that you have a problem with the "brown" part and not just the "trash" part. I certainly have no problem in addressing the fact that the rioters were mostly latinos, but when it's not done constructively it simply comes across to the world as brown = trash. This idea doesn't do anybody any favors either.
Lastly, when I said I wouldn't call you "white trash, I would call you racist trash", I was well aware I couldn't possibly know what race you are. You can be racist of your own race, it's not unheard of. I was making a point that it's the "racist" that's trash, not the color. Having read the rest of your comments, I don't believe you're racist. We obviously both agree that their behavior was shameful, ignorant, etc. and we certainly both agree the LAPD chose the wrong time to show restraint. I do, however, believe saying "brown trash" is racist. And we'll just have to disagree on that.
Interesting side commentary...
It seems to me that few of you follow post Stanley Cup Championship celebrations. If you did, you would know that this type of stuff happens even in Canadian cities, where people are normally many times more tranquil than just about any major U.S. city and have much lesser concentrations of ANY racial group you can think of.
This has nothing to do with race, but rather drunk morons/buffoons/idiots/ignoramus(i).
And not to criticize, but taking the stand that these people are the trash of one's own race/ethnicity doesn't help anyone's cause. This, in broader terms, is the reason why the Latino community has little collective voice in LA; one group always thinks some other group is beneath them. Second generation (born here) consider themselves higher up in the totem pole than immigrants and so forth.
Idiotic.
thank you.
deepfry: hey kettle, the pot's calling
Pointless, senseless, pathetic are a few words that come to mind.
What major city doesn't have riots after an nba championship these days..?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEqwt81wiN4
I guess that makes it OK then.
Hey I know knit. Let's build the next stadium in your neighborhood.
We've got some great teams here in LA. It's a shame the fans have to be cunts.
Take the million dollars and clean up the city and fix everything that was broken, thats how you celebrate. I just can't believe why the uncivilized have to ruin it for everybody else. Most of the city is afraid to attend the celebration because of the unrulely antics of some. Take pride in your city and the Lakers by representing the way a proud city would.
I totally agree with T. It really sucks that some of our Latino community is so ignorant and uneducated. Even more so we can't celebrate our teams winning with respect and some great Laker pride. This was all so uncalled for.
