TV Junkie: 'Daily Show' Punks the NY Times; We Heart Kim Alexis

"She's Got the Look" season premiere at 9pm on TV Land
Last night's "Daily Show" had an excellent segment led by Jason Jones on the New York Times. For some reason the New York Times let Jones into the building, and knowing full well that he's from Comedy Central, were as uptight and humorless as any of the politicians Stephen Colbert has put in the hotseat over the years. Watch the segment, watch editors and reporters from the Times squirm, and wonder how much longer this whole newspaper thing can go on if the flagship is really so disconnected with reality.

Holy Conan lineup, Batman! Fantastic.

Saw the Daily Show segment, and as a former journalist-turned-blogger, it blew my mind and broke my heart. They did seem profoundly disconnected from reality. You hit the nail on the head.

There was one thing they discussed in the end, though, when the editor was saying something to the effect of "The last time I was in Baghdad I didn't see a Huffington Post bureau or a Google bureau or a Drudge Report bureau...it's a lot easier to stay home and riff on the work that somebody else does."

Where will we get our fact-checked, hard-researched news when there's no longer a payroll for it?

I saw that clip this morning and I'm with you on the hilarious/heartbreaking thing. We sacrifice a lot for getting our "news" as fast as possible.

NYT didn't defend the in-depth aspects of reporting that can occur with a newspaper or the quality of the writing in general (er, usually). Those are two good reasons, aside from nostalgia and my love of the media and journalism, that I still subscribe to a paper.

I am so over the partisan media, though. *cough*faux news*cough* and having cable stations that mix "opinion" shows (Hannity/O'Reilly) in with their "news." This goes for the left, too. It's so hard for the average joe to delineate opinion from news anymore.

the correct answer? we won't.

That was a great video. Thanks, Tom!

I love the NY Times but I buy it issue by issue, I do subscribe to a couple papers as well and I'm very aware of what a disadvantage I will be at as a blogger if the NY Times, and other major papers, disappear. Let me know what I can do as an individual to keep them going! But in order for individuals to help, there needs to be system-wide changes and adjustments that the papers just don't seem to want to make (yet).

What was dismaying about the Daily Show segment was the disconnect displayed by NY Times staff.
