A new trend for Los Angeles? After learning that Cruzer Pizza in Los Feliz began offering a vegan-heralded brand of very realistic cheese, Daiya, Purgatory Pizza chimes in via Twitter to us saying, "Someone told me they read on LAist that only one place in LA has Daiya. Not true. We have it at Purgatory Pizza too." For vegan blogger Quarrygirl, her favorite pizza place just got a lot better (added bonus: she notes that you can bring your own beer or wine).
Additionally, after Lucifer's Pizza in Los Feliz erroneously served vegan cheese that wasn't vegan at all, they've gotten it right now: you can now order Teese on your pie.

Thanks for the post! Yes we indeed do have Daiya now. We also still have Teese on hand. Anyone ordering a vegan pizza should specify which you would like. We want to be sure you get exactly what you enjoy the most and find the tastiest!
Breaking News: Farm Sanctuary and Cruzer Pizza bring Vegan Pizza with Real Daiya "cheese" to SECOND LOCATION: Glendale: 1200 Pacific Ave 818-500-1289 Go get your pizza on :)
Mr. Pizza on Fairfax has been serving vegan pizza for years. I tried Cruzer last week after reading about it here. The Daiya cheese is good. It beats Follow Your Heart cheese, and it melts … but it's not revolutionary.
Glad to see more pizza places offering vegan options. I'll check out Purgatory soon. For now, Mr. Pizza remains my favorite.
Does Mr. Pizza use FYH? It seems only super-hot pizza ovens can get that stuff to melt!
Not sure what Mr. Pizza uses. Doubt it's FYH, but I tell it's vegan by that same chunky consistency the Daiya cheese has.
last i checked mr. pizza was using follow your heart. i've had about 5-6 pizzas from there, and they were all pretty gross compared to purgatory and cruzer. PLUS, mr. pizza charges about $10 more per pizza than the other 2 places. i will call them to see if they've switched cheeses, i haven't been there in ages.
i really don't like that place at all. :/ but who knows, as i said, maybe they have changed!
really? i know 'revolutionary' is a strong word, but it definitely is far better than ANY vegan cheese out there, and it actually stretches!!
you gotta hit up purgatory! i think you will be blown away. :) :)
Well, if they are using FYH, that explains the price. … They're probably buying it retail in Canoga Park. I love Mr. Pizza's gritty ambiance. It's so dark in there you can barely find the crushed pepper. Not the kind of place you take Mom for dinner. You go there after the afterparty and thank God because it's the only pizza joint in the world serving vegan pepperoni pizza at that hour.
good point!!! it definitely gets major bonus points for the kickass late night hours.
Follow Your Heart is the least expensive of the vegan cheeses and is readily available from a variety of restaurant food distributors. They are not paying retail. I used to work at Damiano's Mr. Pizza years ago. Will not comment on the place....
I was kidding. BTW, the Purgatory pizza picture on quarrygirl's blog looks dangerous. I might see you guys tonight.
well THAT makes more sense! Hope we do see ya tonight.
oh...good. I do wonder why they charge so much still...
Hope we DO see ya tonight. Thanks
all i know is i would NEVER wanna see mr. pizza with the lights on inside! SCARY!
Agreed.
Yes, Domiano's definitely uses the FYH cheese. I was a good friend of the owner and got him to start carrying that cheese. The pizza is expensive but you can get what you want there even at very late hours. Also their Minestrone soup is vegan(or at least was last I knew) and the marinara sauce is as well. The cheese is not very melted though. I have made my own pizza though at home and I can get the cheese to melt like regular cheese. I have to finish the pizza under broiler to get it melted. Although I don't eat soy any more so I dying to have a pizza with the Daiya cheese. I tasted the cheese at the Natural Products Expo and it was delicious.
