Pedicabs to Make a Comeback in LA?

Two years ago, two pedicab companies tried to set up shop in downtown to carry commuters from subway station to work, from bar to bar, or any kind of short range trip. Lacking permits, they were shut down and the pedicab issue went to study. Now a proposal is back and headed to the city's Transportation Committee, however with some odd rules, notes Eric Richardson at blogdowntown.

Those regulations include operating on streets with speed limits up to 25 miles per hour and one about the appearance of the cyclist-cabbie: "'Driver must be attired in a shirt with sleeves, and a collar, pants or shorts (no sweat pants) with a belt and black shoes.' The vague offense of 'Failure to present a neat personal appearance' garners a $25 fine, plus immediate removal from service."

I don't get the street restriction, but the clothing requirements sound like they come straight out of the dress code for regular cab drivers. LAME.

Pedicabs were all the rage when I lived in Orlando. They covered a couple mile radius around the downtown clubs and made a SERIOUS killing.

AWESOME - more bikes to get in the way of my commute.

would you prefer that an entire taxicab get in the way of your commute?

Do you not realize that taxicabs move faster than bikes?

i always thought pedicabs would make a killing in SaMo/Venice -- shuttling back and forth from Main Street/Abbot Kinney, the Pier, and the Promenade. but i guess that would require two permits, for Santa Monica and the City of LA...

We need pedicabs just to get us to our parking spots after concerts at the Nokia Theater. I felt like a stupid tourist getting in ne of these in NYC, but it turned out to be perfect for short distances.

I am disappointed my topless pedicab business model will have to go back to the drawing board.

i totally agree. i thought they were only for tourists until i grabbed one after a Sox game in Boston, and got back to my car almost 10 minutes before anyone else in that lot.

They just specify a shirt with sleeves and a collar. You could eliminate the front of the shirt and still be in compliance.

You, my friend, are a genius. Cuffs and collars like male strippers. Genius.

I have a pen (blog) pal in NYC. She says she likes to take pedcabs so she can drool over the pedcab drivers' muscular legs.

Insatiable STRUMPETS!!!

It would work great somewhere like Pasadena but in downtown, I'm not sure.

It would be perfect for downtown. There's plenty to do in a relatively short area but sometimes a little too far to walk, especially when you've parked well away from where you want to go. This would be perfect for getting around on friday or saturday, as long as they go from say, 7th and grand, to china town.

I am very interested in this article. I don't see any way on this site to speak to the author of the article.
