LAPD Sting will Focus on Speedy Sherman Oaks Drivers

Every month LAPD Senior Lead Officer George Aguilar takes a look at his area's traffic patterns and behaviors and focuses enforcement on one issue. In the past, he's done pedestrian crosswalk stings along Ventura Blvd., catching drivers who ignore those walking across the street, and enforcement on the various no left turn signs on Van Nuys Blvd. This month, he's going after speeders in these general areas, including nearby side streets: Woodman/Ventura, Van Nuys/Ventura, streets surrounding Van Nuys/Sherman Oaks Park and Valley Vista between Sepulveda and Coldwater Canyon. He encourages people to spread the word (so tell your friends), but he won't say what days each area will be heavily patrolled. Basically, if you keep it cool, there's nothing to worry about.

What about my neighborhood? LAist would love to cover your LAPD Senior Lead Officer, too. However, each of them have different working styles and levels of engagement with their respective communities--it would be more than a full time job to track each of them down on a regular basis to see what's up. If you have a good working relationship with them, please introduce us in hopes of spreading the word about your neighborhood. If you don't even know who your SLO is, they are a great resource for improving your area.

Chances are that he won't be going after speeding motorists on Van Nuys Blvd. because the speed zone cert expired on 5/13/09.

This means that the City of LA if unable to use radar/laser speed limit enforcement on Van Nuys Blvd. until it performs a speed zone survey, measuring the speed of motorists and setting the speed so that 85% are considered legal. aka an opinion poll with motorists voting with their gas pedal, all disguised as science.

LA may have pulled an extension for Van Nuys Blvd. but as it stands, that street has an expired speed zone cert.

Welcome to Mayberry RFD!

They should patrol Magnolia Blvd. where the average speed now is 50mph.

Last weekend, some nut came screaming up behind me, tailgated, whipped around, then proceeded to weave in an out of traffic slamming on their brakes at each stop light.

Sad to say, it's not the first time I've observed this behavior.

Pff

Might as well call it the Armenian car round up.
Not to be racist..but the only vehicles i see speeding along sherman oaks; are BMWs, Mercedes, and Infinity G35s.

After not getting a ticket in 20 years, I got 2 speeding tickets in a week - one on Magnolia and one on Coldwater Canyon. My route to work through NoHo has me passing 5 to 6 cops either idling in a hidden corner or with cars already pulled over. They especially love the area around LA Valley College. It is hardcore.

Oh, and sorry about that, Ugly American - I didn't see you :)

This is great, but I don't think we should spread the word. That seems to be missing the point.

I actually think Van Nuys is not that bad; there's so much traffic it's impossible to get going that fast on the road. I do wish we could encourage more of the North-South traffic on Kester to move over to Van Nuys, since there is an elementary school on Kester. So far as I have noticed, there are no slow-down signs indicating there is a school nearby, which I find shocking.

Every time we're crossing with small children and strollers in tow it feels like we're taking our lives in our hands. The crossing guard says people just run over her cone.

There is absolutely shocking behavior from the motorists, in the clear presence of children crossing or waiting to cross. They don't slow down at the intersections without traffic lights; they turn right in front of and behind crossing kids; and they speed through yellow lights. In the one year we've been at school there I have witnessed two automobile accidents on Kester (my guess is there have been more) -- both were parents picking up who had ventured out of side streets and gotten hit by traffic flying down Kester.
