A New Gin for the Martini

Post by John Brooks/Special to LAist

The launch party for a new super premium gin named Oxley was held at 8 oz Burger Bar on Sunday. There was a lively group who got to hear how this Bombay-backed independent enterprise makes gin a new way. Yeah, yeah. It’s gin. But it is different. 14 different botanicals are macerated in grain spirits and then spooned by hand into a kettle. Then, rather than heating mixture, a vacuum is created that causes the alcohol to vaporize at -5°C. In the true manner of distillation, the vapor passes through a colder probe at -100°C where it changes back to a liquid. The result is 94 proof Oxley gin that is hand collected in a bottle. They only make 120 bottles/day and only work 4 days/week. Not a bad job!

The taste is surprisingly different. Oxley has a mild juniper bouquet that gives rise to intense, almost sweet, herbals on the tongue only to surprise with a return of juniper vapor. The mouth feel is very smooth and the martini it makes is excellent. The martini is a bit more excellent if you stir it and use a Castelvetrano olive (that can be picked up at Wally’s Wine World or Bristol Farms’ olive bar).

Oxley is due to hit stores on June 8 in a bottle with a galvanized tin bucket around the bottom and a leather cord fashionably twisted around the neck. No word on pricing, but with ‘super premium’ as a descriptor you can expect $40-50 for it’s 1 liter bottle.

That first picture could be in a gallery. The flower in the background of the martini glass is a beautiful touch. Love this!

Really nice write up on & gorgeous photos. You sound like a man who knows his way around a good bottle of gin. Can't wait to try some Oxley in my next martini.

I'm a huge fan of gin but I realized the other day I ran out, I'll have to go pick some up to try this out. I'd also recommend Anchor's Junipero (my favorite) and Hendricks (cucumber-y).

hi, kinofcain.

Junipero is great and is actually a pinch greater if the martini is made with Vya vermouth. hendricks is soooo delightful. i lke to just slice an english cucumber (skin on) puree it in a food processer and strain the juice into a shaker. add hendricks, i few drips of lime, and if it is the right time of year, fresh rose petals. crush. shake. yum. garnisih it with a rosebud if you have the plant. :)
