Atwater Village's Lovely Gender-Neutral Humps

Good news for everyone's well-being, but perhaps bad news for speed junkies--at least of the variety who enjoy zipping around on residential streets. "On of the longest stretches of unregulated residential asphalt in Atwater Village, with some 1,600 feet of acceleration space, is getting speed humps," blogs the Atwater Village Newbie.

The speed humps (not to be confused with bumps or lumps) "will be installed on Valleybrink Road between Sunnynook Drive and the 5-way intersection at Dover Street," after two years of traffic and accident studies in the area. The humps will help keep drivers to the posted 25 MPH and make the tempting upped speeds of 40-50 MPH hard to accomplish. The humps are not in place yet, but the signs are, so be aware, speeders, your clock is ticking down fast.

Much like in the case of absent-but-needed or soon-to-be-removed crosswalks, oftentimes residents in areas where traffic and pedestrians have a tense and dangerous partnership must demand vigilance from the City in order to kick accidents to the curb. As drivers, speed humps like the ones about to hit the road in Atwater can be an inconvenience, but for some they are a lifesaver. And if drivers can't slow themselves down, perhaps this is the only solution.

Would you welcome speed humps in your 'hood?

What does explain the change in verbiage from "bumps" to "humps"? Are humps just bigger /wider? ("My lovely asphalt humps...")

Anyway, I once for some reason didn't change the station when Santa Monica City Council was debating this issue for 18th St, I think. Some residents brought up a good point, which is that the speed humps are a mixed blessing, reducing speed of commuters (who don't want to get airborn), but also that of ambulances, which must slow to a near crawl to get over them.

Though...Ambulances can run over kids too

That's true, but they also tend to come all lights and sirens blaring when there's a speed-worthy emergency. Kids tend to get out of the street for that. Stealth hybrids going fast make hardly a sound. Plus, the drivers of emergency vehicles are keenly aware of what's going on around them on the road, not talking on their cell phones, txting, &c. while driving.

no speed humps for me, i like running over children.

But seriously, you have to be one of the biggest idiots in the world to speed through residential areas. I would like to see the invention of speed-tripped road spikes. Not even 30 and I'm an old man :(

We managed to get speed humps on our street in Los Feliz about a year ago... It's slightly lowered the number of Beamers racing down the block, but it still happens, since speed humps really only slow down cars that are lower to the ground...

I completely agree with Batman-esque speed-tripped road spikes... That'd slow'em down...

Good idea. Speeding through residential areas is very reckless. Let's get some stimulus dollars to make it happen! Hope the system doesn't ever malfunction! Four busted tires > run-over kids, though.
