Microsoft Unveils Project Natal at E3

Now that E3 is over we have had a moment to catch our breath and look back on the week. The most talked about announcement was Project Natal. LAist contributor Ali Miller to describes her impression of the Natal unveiling:

All eyes were on Microsoft at this year's E3 as Project Natal made its unprecedented debut. When Steven Spielberg took the stage at Microsoft's press conference, he described Natal as something that would eliminate the intimidation that non-core gamers have about handling a controller. In a display reminiscent of Minority Report, Natal was presented as the pinnacle of motion capture technology that will revolutionize the way we think about entertainment.

With Guitar Hero, Rock Band, and the the newly revealed Tony Hawk game Ride, its becoming more apparent that the video game market is starting to become saturated with peripherals. If Natal lives up to everything it claimed to do at E3, we may just see the diminishing of hardware in the home earlier than expected. In either case, we can't help but geek out about Natal, and with a tentative release date of late 2010, a year can't go by fast enough.

Um, that's great 'n all, but is a crappy Ikea rug required for play?

I thought the same thing! Personally, this looks a bit silly. I guess as a child of the 80's...I feel the need for some sort of controller. I did like the "dress preview" feature though. Go figure.

None of that was interactive/live. Microsoft made a video of what they'd like to so someday. What's new?

That's late next year, not late this year. So at E3 2010, we'll still be at least 6 months away, cuz Microsoft is never late with product delivery. *snort*

I admit it look like it will be cool, assuming it works, whenever it comes out. But who knows what the Wii (or others) will have available then. And this is Microsoft after all, so even after it's released, we'll have to wait for version 3 before it's actually usable.
